Got everything squared away with hard wiring and its fully working! Wasn't too difficult to install and run wires through the car. This thing records front and back, so I feel somewhat better when I park the car or if sh*t* happens. Here are some pics.

Don't know about the 550, but on the 380, the motion sensor for the parking capture is really sensitive.

Also I find that the videos captured while driving are mostly "Event" videos, not "Normal" ones. I have a feeling that the software doesn't compensate for normal gravity in the up/down plane, and so exceeds 1G at the slightest bump.

Cheers.

can you tune the sensor settings on the 380 ?

The DR550's settings are configured via the viewer with changes saved to a config file on the microSD card. The camera then reads this settings file at start-up.

The second page of the viewer allows you to fine tune the sensitivity settings that trigger an event recording in normal mode and a recording in parking mode. Too sensitive a setting and every pothole triggers an event. Too insensitive and a real bump may not trigger it. Advanced configuration allows you to review an event file that triggered the sensor and adjust the thresholds accordingly

Yes, the 380 is the same.

I have the G-Sensor for normal recording wound down to it's lowest setting:

But it still records nearly everything as an Event:

And here's why I think there is a bug in the software, which doesn't compensate for normal gravity:

Note that the Z-Axis is always around the 1G mark. Even at the lowest sensitivity, 1G is the trigger point.

The Parking mode G-Sensor is separate and I haven't really tried to calibrate that one.

Cheers.

+1 for the 550. I have it in my DD, but swap it over to the Lotus when I need. I was worried it would overheat in hot temps, but the cooling slots have done their job so far.

At the very least you're bound to catch some crazy things with these dash cams. Just last month I recorded an apparent drunk sleeping on an Interstate at 1 AM! One 911 call later and he was safely removed.
