Loose shift knob help?

1329 Views 7 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  AndrewS
Hey guys,

Picked up my 05 Elise last week. So far so good but one little thing that's been bugging me is the shift knob (not the shifter mechanism) is loose. As in, it will rotate slightly clockwise-counterclockwise on the shaft and it's driving me NUTS :facepalm . I tightened what looks like a set screw on the front of the knob, which worked briefly but then loosened again. Don't really want to overtighten

Any suggestions?

Thanks- Tyler

If memory serves correct, there's a set screw that holds the shift knob in place. I'd check to see if that is tightened.
What worked for me was to remove the set screw, undo the knob, (screw off counter clockwise), clean it, put a dab of blue lock tight on the shifter threads, and reinstall knob till tight. Then replaced the set screw snug, with a dab of blue lock tight on it. Problem solved.
Mine was corrected by simply tightening that set screw.

Best advise! However use blue not red or green!
Maybe try one of Jim Clayton's balls. Excellent - they screw on tight, no pattern to align to, no set screws.
Blue loctite worked for me too. The set screw doesn't set all that well.
Buy the Sector 111 "Bollock". Mine seems to stay on tight without any loctite and the shift feels a lot better.
