There's a nice feature on these forums to notify you when you receive a Private Message.

In your "User CP", click on "Edit Options", then click the "Yes" option next to "Pop up a box when you receive a Private Message?".

When you have a private message waiting for you, the next time you reload a page, you will receive a popup saying "You have a new Private Message. Would you like to view it now?"

Very handy for maintaining communications.
