Hi All!

I've been sifting around looking to see the costs of maintaining a Lotus throughout the year. I've noticed many people do the small work themselves (oil changes etc.) I've never worked on a car myself. How much does it cost to have it done at garages? Thank you!

Depends on what garage you take to to. If you have an Elise or Exige -- they're just toyota engines. It's actually pretty easy to do an oil change in one, even if you haven't done it before. I found a garage that does mine for 25 bucks if I bring my own oil and filter - which also costs $25. Spark plugs, and filters and such are cheap as any toyota - and brake pads are no more than any other car -- I think you can use Subaru WRX brake pads. The brakes can last quite a while too as the car is only 2,000 lbs.
One of the reasons I bought a Lotus Elise was because the costs of maintaining one are so cheap :)

I’ve never changed the oil in my Evora myself, mostly due to the fact it was under warranty for a few years and after that I live in an apartment and can’t work on my car. Each dealership charges me about $250 for the oil change, but this is with about 7 quarts of 5W-40 full synthetic and a Lotus oil filter. The oil is close to $80 and the filter from Lotus is, what, $50? You can get a Toyota filter for about $10. The rest is labor. I change my oil once a year or every 9,000 miles.

Actually, the above price is what LFSC charged me, Gator charged about $145.

Cabin air filter is about $20+ shipping and you swap that every other year. Engine air filter is more labor than anything and cost me about $82 to get replaced. Brake fluid flush was about $290 last time I had that done. Coolant flush was $320 but that’s a once every 4 year service. New battery installed was $230. Tires only last about 12k miles for the rears and I have yet to go through a set of fronts. Rear tires are about $650 for a set of P4S plus install and alignment.

Definitely not the cheapest car in the world and I could do a lot of this myself if I had a garage but being able to drive a car this awesome is worth the price no matter how you get the service done.

A lot depends on how hard you drive it too. My stock Esprit has had several chances to be up on the high banks at Daytona and scream through the infield as the 24 hour course. Let's just say that I've probably put over $25,000 in the car since I bought it...and I don't care. It's been about finding the "weak link" and fixing it. That way the car only keeps getting stronger.

Mobil 1 oil filter... and a Filter-mag magnet on the filter's outside. The pass size of a Mobil 1 filter [fiberglass/polymer element] is about one tenth the size of a filter that uses paper. Buy your filter, give it to them, tell them to use it

I would say it can range from $150-250 for oil changes from stealerships. I've always done them myself on the Elise as well as other maintenance work. Parts are pretty cheap and labor is fairly manageable for all the maintenance items minus any work requiring to remove the clams. Which also isn't so bad. Just need to take your time and second pair of hands helps alot. So many detailed instructions with pics on this site or even sands museum for the most part. If it's just not feasible to do it yourself(no garage, tools, age), you can expect a pretty good upcharge for any work on the Lotus due to the brand name. Exceptions, would be shops you have a good relationship with. Good luck.
