The point I was trying to make is this:

Because of the Exige's low mass it is able to accelerate to 60 in the same time as this beast with 737 lb/ft of torque and AWD.

I have wondered how our Elise would perform with a small diesel. If you can get a Jetta to do 50 real world MPG on a diesel, you could get the Elise to push 65 MPG, I would think.

A diesel would probably solve our torque issues as well.

I'd say it's probably more an issue of gearing, although I don't know the particulars on the R8. Since diesels aren't really known for their screaming redlines, I'd hazard a guess that there's probably an extra gear change in there on the way to 60. Also, the time quoted is for 0-62, but that's no biggie. Ultimately, I just hope the Exige S doesn't get caught with its pants down (I think everyone hear knows how frustrating that eternity to the 2nd cam can be :)) 'cause the R8 has all that torque available from 1750rpm.
