Luggage rack

 Hi Everyone, newbie here from Scotland.

I have seen the website of a company who make luggae racks for various cars, but no Elises. I have contacted them and they said they are willing to investigate the possibilty of making a suitable rack, but need a car for a weekend to see if it is possible.

So any volunteers in the New York area willing to offer their vehicle?

The company is Bird Automotive and you can contact them through their website.

Has anyone any experiences of their products?

p.s. This is not a sales pitch, and I'm not involved with Bird Auto, just trying to find a luggage rack solution.

Thanks

John

Welcome!

I can't imagine how a luggage rack would be mounted on this car in such a way that it wouldn't run the risk of scratching or damaging the finish. I think it is unlikely that you are going to find a volunteer for the possible punishment.

Meanwhile, I will continue to pack light when travelling in my Elise. Changing your underwear is way overrated anyway. :)

Who needs underwear? Just tell your wife/girlfriend that she is not allowed to pack any unnecessary excess weight ;)

BTW, I'm sure I've seen some S1 Elises with luggage racks. Does anybody on SELOC have any leads?

Yea, the S1 luggage rack is quite common over here, but it's not suitable for an S2, as the S2 clams are thinner and unable to take the weight.
Elise parts website has luggage racks for S1

I also know of people who use an S2 with the hard top and roof bars from a small car can sometimes fit them.

But I've managed this lot in the 'boot' of my Elise with no problems.

Thats impressive  I find lots of smaller round compressible bags fit in much more than any case with fixed sides.
By the way, where did you take that photo?
I used to live down south in Bournemouth with the Sasanach but unfortunately I didn't have an Elise at that time.
Well, there's this:

Not exactly a reversible installation, but it looks pretty slick. Anyone have one?

Tintin, that photo was taken about as far away from Bournemouth as you could get, without taking a ferry! Just a few miles south of Tongue on the north coast of Scotland, according to Multimap, 650 miles and 14 hours driving time :crazyeyes

:D
I have lived for a week out of a backpack half the size of an Elise boot, and I carried tent, sleeping bag, and some liquor. Also took a friend X-Mas shopping last year for two small kids and both his parents. It all fit in, with ingenuity.
That rack is only suitable for the old S1 Elise, unfortunatly.
am I the only one who would go out of my way to punch someone who put any of these on their elise?

It is not a touring car! You knew it had a small trunk going into it. Pack light or take a different car. The alternative is I tell my gf she can pack whatever she wants but it has to be in her lap the whole trip...that happened once and hasn't happened since.

Seriously back to my point, this is not a utility car. Who is taking their elise snowboarding?
why not? It's your car, do what you like to it. That's silly to say OMG YOU CAN'T DO x because it's not purpose built to do it. If that were the case, we would all be driving 211's or 7 replicas instead.
I never said you CAN'T do it, I was suggesting that you shouldn't.

Of course you can do anything with anything, but tell me you wouldn't be the first one to laugh or call someone out if they showed up to an auto-x event in an H2?

My point exactly...

In Davos, I have seen almost every exotic you can imagine during ski season. "Biggest brass ones" award goes to the guy who came up with a ski rack on his 911 RS (or recreation) in half a metre of fresh snow.

ahhhhh you are all missing my point!!! :panic:

Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you should! I can hold up a metal pole in the middle of a lightning storm and not get struck by lighting, but it doesn't mean that it is a good idea.

I obviously am not going to win this one, but I can't believe that I am the only person on here that wouldn't dream of taking their car skiing or putting an f'ing bike rack on it.

I don't have another car either, but for the instance of going skiing i would probably shill out the $300 to rent a 4x4 for the weekend to not risk putting my car in a ditch.
