Bought an Elan M100 from a friend about 6 months ago. I'm the second owner. I'm enjoying the car, except for it's reaction to rough roads and bumps.

When I am on a rough road or even drive over the expansion joint of a bridge, I get considerable front end shake. It is pretty disconcerting. I've had the car on a lift and visually inspected the bushings, and they don't look like they're squishing out or in need of replacement - but I'm not sure they're not the problem.

Is this is a common problem with the M100? Is it cowl shake? I have owned a lot of cars, but few of them have been open cars. Worst open car for cowl shake I've owned was a Camaro convertible. The Elan seems to react in a similar way to the Camaro, but maybe a bit more severe - it's been a while going on 20 years since I owned that GM product, so my memory might be fuzzy.

What do I need to do to lessen this reaction to pavement irregularities?

No this is not common

It is not at all like a Camaro

I am going to imagine it needs struts, tires lots of things a 25 year old car needs

It is harsh in the way that all newer cars with low profile tires are[compared to an elan or europa]

I put over 50k on my M100 and sold it with nearly 110k, it did not act as you describe

In my ownership I put all 4 struts, ball joints and a wheel bearing

Even if it has low miles, age catches up with many parts

Thanks for your comments - I got a very complete history with the car, so I'll take a look to see when the struts were replaced - they're adjustable, and they also act a bit strange. Good place to start. Same with the tires - I'll research when they were replaced, hmmm, if ever.

You've given me some places to start.

My information shows that the shocks (adjustable) and tires (Michelin) are both about 12 years old.

Any recommendations for shocks? The only ones I've found referenced so far are Protech.

Also not finding many sources for M100 parts and pieces - recommendations for sources?

Dave Bean may have OEM parts
I looked at their website over the weekend and didn't see any indication of M100 parts. I'll call them later today to see what they carry for my car. Dave Bean seems highly recommended, so I'd prefer to deal with them. Hopefully his loss hasn't impacted the company.

Hi Mike,

I'll drop you a PM with a friends email address who has a lot of M100 parts over in NC, and is probably the most knowledgeable M100 guru I know.
He can probably help you out.

They are selling off some fully loaded old stock Federal front struts for £50 each and are happy to either ship overseas or let you arrange collection by a courier.

I think you are being a little too vague for anyone to make an educated assessment. I believe the body is bolted rigidly to the chassis.

You need to define cowl shake.

The car is not infinitely rigid

Is it rattling, is it changing course over certain bumps?
