While I am sure most would agree this engine will give a much more desirable response in throttle than the 2zz, I have a feeling that much more power will overpower the chassis at corner exits too easily. 400hp in a 2zz and 400 hp in the 2GR are completely different. That kinda scares me a bit.

Is that the Camry gearbox you have used with the selector on the rear of the box? Custom selector cables too?

Any reason why you haven't used the Mr2 box with the selector on the other side? Is it packaging or for the better ratios?

Hopefully see some video of this in action too. :)


Oh yes, and what have you done for shafts, are they an off the shelf item or are they custom?

The E153 is a 1995 MR2 Turbo transmission.

Yep, that's correct. It's also the Solara/Camry transmission in some rare manual applications.

It comes with slightly longer gear ratios and the selector shaft is also on the opposite side to the Mr2 as it's used in a FWD setup.

This, seems to be such an E153 due to the selector assembly, just interested to know if it was selected for it's ratios or for packaging reasons.

MWR picked it for its strength. Tho, I want to know what other trans will bolt up that would make the package lighter and have closer ratios (6 speed aswell?). Im only interested in an NA application of this engine so it wont make more than 400hp. If I wanted to go turbo id use a 2zz and E153 trans.

There is the EA62 (i think) 6 speed boxes as used in the Avensis etc, the Evora uses custom gear parts from aisin in one of these cases.

The E153 is stronger though from what i can tell, at the expense of a 6th gear obviously.

You can get an LSD for these EA6x boxes but they aint cheap, £1200 new.

As i mentioned, it's rare.

Ultra-rare over here in the UK, as in non-existent. We only get auto Camrys.

That's why i'm interested to know if the box was chosen for packaging, i.e is there room in front for the selector shaft there and could an Mr2 E153 box be used?

It is the E153, the strongest transaxle in the known universe. This car has the MR2-T version with the shorter final drive and factory LSD. We will be running the Camry version with the longer gears and a Kaaz diff in our LSR Celica this year. Should do better than 235mph at 9k rpm if the car and driver are willing!

I've looked at the new 6-speeds but because they're designed for 4-cylinder diesel engines they have kind of funky gear ratios. 2nd and especially 1st are extremely short. The one from the Evora (same gearing issues) is the only one that would 100% bolt up, the diesel bell housing has some issues. Last, it's definitely not as strong as the E153 because everything is made smaller inside to fit the 6 ratios.

I really like the E153 ratios for a car with some power. I wouldn't choose it with an NA 2ZZ but with a warmed over supercharged setup, turbo or V6 it is excellent. The 5th ratio is just fine on the highway too.

So have you modded the Mk2T box to have the selector on the rear? Was that because it wouldn't fit on the front?

It can be run on either end for 4-cylinder. Needs to be on the back with a 6 because of the starter.

Is this a $10 grand project or a $20 grand project? (w/engine)

Im saving my pennies now!

We're working out the exact #s now. A complete turnkey setup with very low mile (5-25k mile) engine, new ECU, new LSD trans, 600hp axles, mounts, electronics, long tube custom stainless headers and stainless muffler section, ACT clutch, fidanza flywheel, clam modification and install looks to be just under $20k. You can sell your stock engine and trans (and supercharger system if so equipped) to recoup a significant portion of the cost. For now this is a complex swap (especially the electronics!) and a shipable kit is not yet possible. I know the demand is there so we will work at simplifying it and if that works out we'll see about a kit in the future. For now, I've already talked to a couple of people who are looking at making arrangements to ship their cars here for the swap. First come first serve.

Compare the total cost (minus what you could get for your stock engine and trans) to adding a supercharger kit, 2ZZ bolt ons like an intake, header and exhaust, E153 kit, clutch, install for those parts and a tune and the V6 looks pretty reasonable. Reliability of a stock production V6 should be better than a supercharged 11.5:1 engine pushed to its limits. And all that torque...

Just under $20K turnkey is a VERY reasonable, possibly more economical, option than building and boosting a Lotus 2ZZ. ForcedFed charged more for their built motor turbo setups and Sector111's Ecotec swap is a hair over $20K, and neither come with a transmission suited for the higher power output. If you guys can keep it around the $20K mark, this will be a very attractive option for those looking for insane power.
