I've been looking into purchasing a used Elise as a second car, but completely wrecked my Civic a few days ago. I was going to put the Lotus on hold and get a more practical every day car, but was told I should go ahead and get my dream Lotus. Any thoughts?

Welcome Rachel. Sorry to hear your Civic is done, hope you are ok. Lots of people around here use them daily although I don't. I vote yes you need a Lotus.

Lotus is a great DD, but I don't know that I would recommend it for an only car....

Rachel,
Tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of posts on this specific topic...

Searching can be a bit of a pain but the info is there.
But, since you asked....

My take is quite simple:
The Elise is a great car to drive, but severly limited as a daily driver. Others disagree. A recent poll here shows how fragmented this opinion is. http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f3/lotus-only-car-58756/

If I were you I'd get the Lotus for most driving, but also a beater for lousy weather or when you need to transport just about anything besides yourself. You can get a decent 2nd vehicle for pretty cheap and it will probably save you in the long run relative to tire wear and potential damage to the Elise.

Good luck making up your mind.

here are tons of threads discussing this point:

One more thing, pricing on Lotus' aren't too bad right now. You can get an 05 for a decent price if you're willing to shop around and travel to get the vehicle. Check the For Sale section of the forum. A quick check on EBay shows BuyItNows in the range of $35K. You can probably get something in the low $30Ks.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info!! I think you have a great idea going about getting a cheap car ontop of the Elise. Hmm...

Welcome to LotusTalk

There is not much that an Elise cant do that the Civic can do (OK - seat 4 - little more carrying space - but its not as if your originally planned other car is a truck) - get the Elise!! :)

Lots of people get by on motorcycles and scooters. Get the Lotus. I drive it everyday even though my wife and I have two other cars. I rarely think about it.

I have other 'more practical' everyday cars but I never drive them anymore since I got my car.

I love the Lotus so much that any other car is just too boring. :D ...but I also just LOVE to drive that thing.

I bought a used cavalier for my daily driver. cheap, practical, and good on gas.

I didn't read the linked posts, but incase you didn't know having a cheap car as your primary and the lotus as secondary, your total insurance may actually be cheaper than if you just had the lotus as primary.

Sorry guys, but she lives in Ohio. The Elise is simply not an option on days like this, whereas a Civic actually is.

Of course, with a driveway like mine (see tire tracks on right) not only is the Elise not an option in winter, I need 4WD on all my other vehicles: Audi Quattro, Dodge Dakota and AWD Toyota Sienna. I really hate winter

And we also need more female lotus drivers. To answer your question it is an awesome daily driver. Clearly you need to move away from the snow of Ohio. Use your family's car or buy a 4wd one for winter use. Welcome to LT

I daily drive mine.. LOVE it... It even makes going to work fun and it'll get as good as or better gas mileage than the civic. :D Just pick up a cheap beater for the winter time driving. If you can hold out just a bit longer the prices might drop even more as a lot of people will probably start offloading there cars so they can get the new Eagle or what ever it's going to be called when it gets released here shortly...

BTW you look very nice...
