Hey Randy,
Any chance of increasing the allowed size of user avatars we upload? i.e. current restriction is 100x100 (I think), so how about 200x100 (where 200 represents pixels on the x axis).
This would still fit nicely in the column (I think) and allow some more interesting pictures, as landscape images would not need to be compressed as much. Or is there something I just missed regarding uploads?

Here's a dumb question.
How do you tell how many pixels an avatar has, my photo editing software (adobe) only lists in inches and fractions of inch??

THanks

I just want to say at this point that I'm really glad there's an option to turn off avatars.

Good thing people here haven't started putting pictures in their signatures, because I'd probably stop reading this board if/when that happens.

I find all the animations and movement really really distracting, and in fact, give most forums a sort of "cheap" feel, because of all the junk (Madonna kissing, Janet's boobs, silly stick figure animations, etc.) people put in their avatars. I pity the casual observers to such sites.

Wow, that's the stuff I like and that makes a forum fun. I like the visual stuff. I'm not too hip on the non car stuff like Janets boobs and stuff of that nature though. That is too tacky. A tastefull non moving chick avatar is okay though.

EDIT: Oh yeah, you also have the option to not show signatures on this forum. I like them, but at least there is an option to remove them for those that don't.

It is indeed a compromise. Many people enjoy avatars and like associating people with them more easily than the name. Some people do not like them. More images suck if you are on dial up. A forum is already image intensive from buttons and such.

So we have the option to not see them, which is a good thing (tm Stewart Corp).

I turned off the ability to have images in sigs as I have done on all my forums. My personal pet peeve includes forums where 80% of every thread's content is images and lengthy signatures showing every car they own or did own... and all the mods to those cars.

I will also not allow suggestive avatars here or excessive animation. And I like keeping the avatars small, sorry. I dislike too much of it. If anyone needs one resized, I would be happy to do it.

Smilies.. I have some mixed feelings about. I like some. They IMO do indeed help convey when people are joking... and that is important in pixel based communication. On one forum I run, I have a co-admin that likes smilies... and enjoys adding new ones. We have HUNDREDS. Yes, I know they are out there. But the users on the forum seem to use 20 or 30 smilies in many posts. Seems more like a rebus puzzle or a 13 year old girl's love note than a post to me. I admit, it's my pet peeve, a lot of other people must like it.

So.... I will add some smilies, but sparingly please. We don't need a lot of them.

Whoo-hoo, more smilies. Then I won't have to pull in ones from elsewhere.

I noticed that the avatar labeled "Moe" is actually Barney, and the one labeled "Smithers" is actually Mr. Burns.

I expect this to be corrected immediately!!;)

When using I/E as a browser, point at the picture and right click, and then click on properties from the drop down box. Ths will show the pixel size.

There should be an option for your software to view the dimensions in pixels instead of inches. If you're using Photoshop, I belive it's under Preferences/Units & Rulers. If you're using another Adobe product (ImageReady?) then there might be a similar option somewhere.

If all else fails, multiply the number of inches by the dpi (usually 72).

You can make any pic into an appropriately sized avatar without photoshop, etc.....I am sure that you computer guys know an easier way to do this, but this is how I do it (yes I did Janets tacky boob shot this way - at least it was censored)

find a pic you like and right click on it...

select "save picture as"....
tell it where you want to save the pic (e.g. desktop)and what format (jpeg if avail)

Then go to the icon of the pic where you have saved it (e.g. desktop), right click on it, and select "edit". This will open a windows paint editor.

Under the top menu select "image", and in the submenu "attributes" to find the size in pixels.

Then go back to top menu , select "image" again, and in the submenu select "stretch/skew". To decrease the size of your pic to acceptable pixel size, just put the % in the "stretch horizontal" and "stretch vertical" boxes (e.g. if your pic was 200x200 and you want to get to 100x100 pixels, enter 50% (in both hor. and vert. boxes to avoid distorting the pic....)

Save the pic by going to the "file" menu and pick "save" or "save as" ("save as" will keep the orginal size pic intact on your computer as well, and allows you to change fromat of your pic - e.g. gif to jpeg)

It's based on the same principle as, 'how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?' You may have to round off a little at the end but it shouldn't be a big deal.
