Custom wheels

What was the cost on the Rotiform wheels?
I talked to Jason in California from Rotiform. REALLY knowledgable guy! Really took his time with me. Remembered the original wheels made for Lolo. I told him I wanted exactly the same wheels- correct offsets, powder coated silver, 17x8's front, except 18x10's in back. I thought he would say use a stepped wheel in back so they could use the same center. He said no, you don't want to do that. That would actually make the rear wheel look smaller. He quoted $685 for fronts, $695 for rears=$2760, not including shipping from Chicago. They are made in Cali but would only charge me from Chicago. I didn't ask the shipping charge. I just about choked! That's about half the price I have been quoted for other 'custom wheels'. Still not cheap but- forged, powder coated, correct offset and the same look for the car as the originals is huge to me. A local dealer had emailed him after I had talked to the dealer, the dealer was a little confused because Jason quoted me a lower price than he gave the dealer but he said they would go by what Rotiform quoted me.
I was pretty excited about all this, but my health insurance is goofed up and they admit it's their fault but still no checks. Have been thinking I may have to get a lawyer! That's why I haven't pulled the trigger on the wheels yet, but I will.
I've been studying tires and sizes every day!
Putting all new belts on the car and checking valve clearances instead of looking out the window at the 2 day ice storm we've been having.
Doing that work with the engine in the car instead of on the bench is a little more challenging!

Guess I'm still leaning towards Boze.
This is one of their lightest yet not too expensive customs. Much of the weight is in the centers and hubs, so I'm going with stepped barrels. They will also machine the hubs down while still retaining the strength.
17s we're going to be about 17pounds and 18s we're around 19lbs. Also they would take out the extra little machine detail around the spokes if I want. Need them to be easy to clean (hate dirty wheels). They were basically the same price as Rotiforms.
I also looked at BonSpeed wheels, again a similar price point.

nice looking wheels. I was leaning toward something similar until I found the Rotiforms. Those are really light! Hope I can keep the weight down on mine. I will go for the pocketing option too when I do it.

If I were you, and obviously I am not, I would go with 17's all around or 18's all around, not the staggered 17f/18r package. Although matched staggered sets are still available, tire selection is limited. It would be a shame if you bought a hot new set of wheels and found that the tire selection went the way of the staggered 15/16 packages of the SE.

Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions...

I checked tire rack and in the sizes I'm looking at -staggered 17 front 18 back there are 26 different tires available and all the better performance tires I was wanting.

I stand corrected once again! Well that is good to hear because IMO the 17f/18r has the right look to it.

What sizes front and rear were you looking at? Spring is around the corner and new tires are on my list.

Yeah, (cough), not quite the look I was going for Loren. The sizes I settled on are 245/40/17 front, 275/35/18 rear. If you try the v8 size tires, even they have very limited availability; '97 v8 235/40/17, 285/35/18. Put that into tire rack and you come up with 1 tire available.:shrug:

A 295 rear tire is closer to the OEM circumference.

The smaller ones you mentioned are just...too small. (lolo traded rears for a bigger size too)

Just as a comparison, the Lotus recommended 225/60R15 rear tire (which I hated) is -1.8%smaller than stock.

The biggest you'll be able to go on the front of an 88 will be 225/40-17. Possibly 235 if you add 20mm offset. Even that will rub if the front end is lowered much.
On the rear you're much more open as any stock 5-108 wheel will require spacers and custom offset is up to you allowing whatever offset you desire.

Have to do some more research. If I put in the sizes you guys recommended I get '0' results on tire search on tire rack. I do want to get this right, before I have the wheels built. According to my insurance co., the issues that I mentioned in an earlier post, they "have been resolved". We'll see. I have been told this before. If so I may be able to order wheels next week midweek:clap:

After some more number crunching and reading all your recommendations, (thank you all,) and rereading Lolo's trials. It looks like 215/45/17 fronts and 275/35/18 rears with 9.5 inch wide rear wheels instead of 10's will work. The section difference front to back I'm not crazy about, so I'm also looking at 275/40 18's but they are higher .7" diameter. The last v8 rear recommended size 285/35/18, I think they may look out sized compared to the fronts. I really don't want it to look like a top fuel dragster. I was looking at the way Lotus matched tires pre the larger front wheelhouse change, that's why I'm leaning toward 9.5 inch rear wheels and 275 section either 40 or 35. My other parameter is I really like what I'm reading on Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's and the price! Second choice is Michelin Pilot Super Sport. I have those on another car, and great tire but ridiculous price for the wear.

I know there are some significant differences between our cars, but I am running 215/40/17 and 275/35/18 on my car with 17x8.25" on the front and 18x9.75" on the rear. Tires are BFG comp 2's. Dimensionally they look well balanced, I would not change the sizing unless somebody came out with a 225/40/17 for the front. Never had any issues with rubbing front or back even at full lock. My only *very minor* complaint is that I think those tire sizes invoke a little more understeer than would be ideal....I haven't pushed it that far though.
