According to Toyota and Pontiac, the '04 Vibe/Matrix 2ZZ-GE makes 173hp @ 7600rpm and 127lbft @ 4400rpm. Compared to the old 180hp @ 7600rpm and 130lbft @ 6800rpm. I haven't seen any official specs for the '04 Celica GT-S.

So far, the quoted Elise numbers seem to be more in line with the older spec 2ZZ-GE. But the detuning of the Matrix/Vibe for improved midrange makes me wonder about the Elise's motor and the reviews praising it's flexibility. Does it incorporate the unknown changes, but without losing top end like the Matrix/Vibe?

Don't the Matrix and the Vibe use the 1ZZ-FE (same as the MR2)?

hmm... sounds like they changed the cam for '04. With peak torque 2400 rpm lower, you've suddenly made the car more drivable and able to handle the extra mass of the Matrix.

Ok so that engine is now hitting peak before cam change. That means they've likely picked a less wild cam for the switch (possibly to improve economy figures/emissions). Lotus won't do that as they really wanted 200bhp in the first place. 190bhp was a sacrifice!
