NYT (sort of) likes McCain. He was their endorsement pick for Republican nominee early in the primary process.

Actually the paper's own Public Editor admitted the NYTimes was a liberal newspaper in his column. Right from the horse's mouth:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/25/weekinreview/25bott.html?ei=5088&en=452926dcb11511a3&ex=1248667200

Oops!
He's not the editor of the Times. He's a basically just a reader given an opportunity to comment on *his* views.

He makes some pretty weak arguments though. His analogy about the gay parenting stories for example doesn't make sense. He basically believes that every story about gay people should be counterbalanced by someone who thinks homosexuality is wrong. This would be akin to having to put an environmentalist's viewpoint into any story relating to SUVs.

Actually, he's not "just a reader given an opportunity to comment on *his* views", he's got a serious resume with plenty of journalistic experience:
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/weekinreview/okrent-bio.html

From the link:

Daniel Okrent was named to the newly created position of public editor in October 2003. The public editor works outside of the reporting and editing structure of The Times and receives and answers questions or comments from readers and the public, principally about articles published in the paper.

Not really, but his point about the lack of balance is dead on.

This would be akin to having to put an environmentalist's viewpoint into any story relating to SUVs.

Actually, I think the Times does do this! rotfl

You don't agree with him? How surprising... -poke-
