Oh no, my cooling fan fell down

Today I noticed that one of my two cooling fans has broken free. I think it still works. I have never heard it sliding around when I drive the car though. For the time being I've added the white cord you see in the second picture, just to keep it more secure.

I'll have to figure out how to reattach it but probably it will not be too hard.

I had a "before" picture from many years ago.

Looks like you're long overdue a clam-off refresh in there!

I think D3shooter covered how the fans attach in one of his videos, might be a useful reference.

Comparing to the other fan, it kinda looks like a mounting tab may have rusted and broken so you may need to get creative.

If there's anyone who knows about Elise fans, it's this guy. ^^^

What is the name of that part that is all corroded?
Maybe if I keep the fan running all the time, it will elevate just like a flying saucer. That way I won't need to bolt it in. :)
David,

Are you driving year round up there?
That’s a mighty amount of rust😅
Yes I drive summer and winter. I've driven about 200,000 miles in 14 years. Yes there are many rusty bits on this car.

You can see the brackets I fabbed for the fan on this replacement ac condenser. The originals on David's car probably rusted away

Thanks for the info on the brackets
I think I read that one of the two fans comes on first and the second one only comes on if things really heat up.

Does anyone know which fan comes on first? Is it the driver side one or the passenger side one? Actually I was in heavy traffic the other day. It hit about 104 C and then the temps dropped. I scanned LotusTalk and that seems to be the second fan starting up. I am guessing the my 1st fan is the one that fell down and currently doesn't really help out.

They both come on but in series first (so there is a 6V drop across each) then parallel (12V drop across each). DC motor speed is proportional to voltage (if it has enough current to overcome the loads), so this gives it an easy two-speed control.
You won't even notice the fans on low. They will just push a little air
when they go high, yeah you hear that, as cyow5 says, both at the same time
Thanks for the answers. I have a number of things to fix on my car. I'm also still on snow tires and have to put back my summers and buy a new set fairly soon. I also have to fix the droopy headliner on my hardtop. I was down in the US on the weekend and was in a stop and go situation watching my water temperatures rise. It was a bit nerve racking.
If you have never done the fan resistors, or updated the AC it is as good a time as any
If the brackets are rotten, the condenser is on its way
Lots of good things to do while in there, and none of it need be that pricey

So I have fixed the fan that fell down. I ended up using some wire to hold the back of the fan and a block of wood to hold the front of the fan.

I also decided to paint the tow hook bracket.

1) I found a spot to add a bolt and wire. This was to hold the front side of the fan
2) Green wire holding the back of the fan. I fed it upwards at the back
3) The green wire was tied to a spot on the top side of the rad
4) The bolt in 1) fell out so I used a block of wood instead
5) Rusty
6) Pained with Tremclad
