Hopefully, your engine is OK. Oil starvation does not take long to stress the engine.

I had the same thing happen to my 2005 Elise (13,000 miles)about one year ago. I only have one oil cooler on the driverside of my Elise. On my car the oil light did not come on. I paid my dealer to replace the oil lines and cooler. I did send some of my oil that was still in the sump, to "Blackstone Labortories" in Fort Wayne IN. They analyzed my oil and said it did not show any thing out of the ordinary. I had just had the car at the dealer for a major service, only 10 miles before the oil line burst at the fitting for the oil cooler. I also had the Lotus tech clean the front and underside of my car while the clam was off the car.

Lotus has sent out a letter a few months ago about an Oil line recall. So you should not have to pay for the repair.
After I got my car back, the motor is running ok. I did check on the price of a new motor from Lotus, it is around $14,000! With the recall you should be OK, after it is all said and done.

they may have to buy you an engine. It is likely you are covered now that the recall has been announced. They have bought other Elise owners engines I believe. Hope it's not necesscary - glad you are safe, and here's hoping you are back on the road again soon. I have less than 30 days until my oil cooler gets "relocated" to the engine bay, and new short oil lines w/reliable connectors are installed.. I can sleep then. Until then, I'm taking it easy on the motor.

i also have a single oil cooler although never really thought to look at it through the left fin duct -have read of a complete system beingreplaced on this site by one party from new york with the dealer/customer invoice shown but find that too good to be true & installing a second cooler - but can't be sure if that was at customer request -& I would think lotus would not pick up tab on 2nd cooler - if engine is fouled that might be a fight with lotus [new owners] to pick that up also-though on face one problem led to the other [ might depend on how public sensitive they are going forward ]

My dealer asked me if would like to add the second oil cooler when they replace my bad one. I think the amount with parts was about $500. I decided to pass, since I don't track my Elise.

ron, that clears up some info adding afree 2nd cooler & makes since, I dont know at this point if cooler is bad just guessing hose fitting failed -& feel they would replace as such - whether just the failed one or replace all fittings which might be 6 even with 1 cooler & whether they also replace all hoses plus fittings or just the 1 hose & fittings on both sides of hose connection - my gut tells me the one but i dont know yet it may take a week for them to even look at car since they said their jammed up -then theres the brakes saturated in oil plus tire & how they will access that situation - should i go on ?

File a complaint with the NATIONAL TRAFFIC SAFTEY ADMINISTRATION , 888 327 4236 , complaints add up re the the entire oil line problem . Your oil seal could also leak later for an added fee of about 700.00 , make sure they change the oil plate seal located at the filter.

Warranty won't matter. :) If the motor was damaged as a result of the failure - you should be fine.

I'm thinking it makes sense to give the shop a little credit - make a list of your concerns as you see them, and communicate. These guys/gals are most likely very pro, and should take care of you. Trust but verify? Was that Regan?

Ron, oil analysis was a good idea.

Midlife,

1. Are you having > 1 crisis?

2. Given that fitting failure can be dangerous to you or others spinning in your oil, it makes no sense to have only to offending fitting changed.

3. Brake pads on that corner are toast.

I was assuming after this failure Lotus would automatically do the entire loop, wouldn't that be the correct path?

Komiko, making a list of concerns is an excellent suggestion & will be my first priority - with also trying to educate myself with everything that could possibly be now or down the road including the engine, brakes, a thorough cleaning with the clam shell off for starters - seals i hadn't even thought of - thank you

glb, my ex accused me of having a mid-life-crises when i started buying the cars i now have
There's a lot of that around.

Altho, some of us have had sports cars since teenage years. Therefore, something else is wrong with us.

Crisis, iirc, is singular, crises is plural.

Quick, have another crisis.:)
