Is anyone driving with left foot on brake during harsh event like auto-cross or rally? I heel-toe a lot but at one point last weekend I was curious if setting the car a little with the brakes while keeping the power on would have been a good move. I'll have to read up a bit and see what the experts are doing.

Drop the throttle and it will stop under-steering real quick. Just be careful where you do this.

Left-foot braking is faster, but only if:
1) you have the sensitivity in your left foot to modulate the brakes effectively.
2) you do not need to use the clutch to shift.

Assuming the Elise has a full-synchro gearbox, you need to use the clutch, and that precludes left-foot braking in any corner where a downshift is required. But nobody downshifts on an auto-cross course (just short-shift off the line and take the whole thing in second), so it could work well there. Even on a fast course where 3rd is required, it's difficult to imagine you'd downshift more than once. Heel-toe for that corner, and left-foot brake everywhere else.

Now, if you're used to right-foot braking, your left foot may not be sensitive enough.

The point of left-foot braking is mainly that you have a quicker transition between acceleration and braking. Coasting is not what you want. Especially with a rear weight bias. It's okay to be off-throttle for a bit, to help rotate the car. This is the advantage of a rear weight bias. You can turn quicker, and earlier. Pick up the throttle earlier than you would in an FR car, though. It's all in the timing.

I am a big user of LFB. However I do rallying in an older Subaru. LFB helps to settle the car as well as "fine tune" the attitude of the car mid-corner. However in driving my Boxster (Just got the lotus 2 weeks ago, haven't driven it in anger yet) I found that it also helped in the same manner. Especially if you intend on staying in the same gear through a set of corners. It can help to really get the perfect speed right on the limit by barely dragging the brakes. I intend on AutoX'ing in a few weeks to learn the limits of the Lotus.

Though also in rallying, when you get near that limit and things look like they are gunna get real bad. GAS GAS GAS, it's about the only thing that will pull you out of the corner.



Skip to 5:30 to see where when I cooked the corner way too hot and started going off, lots of gas pulled us out of a dangerous situation, and got lucky with the snowbanks. But if I had just laid on the brakes, would have gone straight off into the trees!


Note the average speed on that stage was 66mph, top speeds of over 100mph on snow and ice. :clap:

drive an m100... the ONLY way to get that thing around is to keep your foot buried in the throttle even when your slowing down :)

i have the formula car set up for left foot, and thats the way i drive it - in the lotus i do on rare occasions here and there, along the lines of what Mconte is saying above.

I'm pretty sure it's the sort of thing that is worthwhile in a car that doesn't have much engine drag, but if you are racing a lotus it should be at high rpm most of the time then and lots of turn in can be had from simply lifting. The only time I ever used my left for breaking so far was in a go-kart.

Drove an RX-8 recently and they are is heavy and rotary based so the lift-oversteer wasn't nearly as active as on my lotus. (it also was bone stock and on 400 treadwear so I couldn't seem to make it turn at all :) ) I might try to learn left foot breaking if I drive it again.
