One reason to live in Ohio

It turns out that the State of Ohio considers Lotus cars to be "Collector" vehicles. Due to their low numbers, and "unique" nature, they qualify for this designation.

Why does this matter?

Collector cars are EXEMPT from all emission requirements and controls. No smog tests.

With a collector plate, you do not have to do the periodic exhaust tests.

I'm guessing that decat pipes are popular in Ohio. :D

I should know, I have one! :coolnana:

FYI.

I hate you almost as much as those poor souls in Cali hates you right now.

whats the big deal? no smog testing in NY
Wayne - Prior to Ohio eliminating E-check in my southern Ohio county a couple years ago, I tried to get my car listed as collector but no go...the terminology from here:

Due to a administrative ruling, vehicle models not listed in the above publications may be considered collector vehicles if the applicant obtains documentation from the manufacturer that the vehicle was in limited production, is in demand as a collectible vehicle at the time of application or a sizable investment can be proven.

Do you have a collector plate on now and if so, what docs did you give them from Lotus? Would love to have these on my car to avoid any future hassles.
I was under the impression that "Collector" plates limited the times you could drive the vehicle. Kalifornia only designates "Historical Vehicles" which carry this limitation:
Issued to a motor vehicle manufactured after 1922, which is at least 25 years old or older and of historic interest. Vehicle may only be driven in historical exhibitions, parades, or historical vehicle club activities.

Dave,
I've got a collector plate on mine.

No issues. I filled out the standard Collector form.

Here is the NADA link confirming that the Lotus Elise is a Collector vehicle: 2005 Lotus Elise 2 Door Coupe prices with options and values at NADAguides.com

This is what they use to certify my application.

WINTERS IN OHIO

How are the winters in Ohio? In California, it sometimes rains during the winter. Sometimes, it even gets too cold to go to the beach. And people in Southern California can go to the Rose Bowl whenever they want.

It is slightly different in Ohio.

The "Collector" car CAN NOT be your primary vehicle. You must show/prove that you have another vehicle, which is assumed to be your DD.

I had to provide the VIN of my main car as part of the application process.

Hi Dave,
Tires arrived at work today. I wasn't in today, but I confirmed they are there. Thanks much.

I'll pick them up over the weekend.

Hope you got my check by now.

I hate to brag but......

South Carolina = No emissions testing
South Carolina = No vehicle inspections period
South Carolina = No long winter

:D

....granted the talk funny, eat grits and watch NASCAR, but if you can get over that
One more reason - Insurance - 05 elise = $341 / year (liability 250/500, comp- 0 deductable, collision - 500 deduct) OK - so I'm over 50 and have multiple vehicles.
Hmm, this is interesting, any other advantages to having a collector plate other than emissions? No testing in Butler county.
Thats a plus haha. I guess it depends on where you live or simply who you know. Where I take my cars to get inspected I know the guy so he gives me a sticker no matter what. As long as the simple things like headlights and turn signals work Im golden

+1 here in Florida

See A LOT of Ohio plates here during the winter. A LOT.

There's so many fine folks from Ohio moving down here that some ******* started this website: Go Back To Ohio About

There's so many moving here after being scared by Florida hurricanes that they've started calling them "half-backs." - moving halfway back to Ohio.

Btw, we don't have any type of vehicle inspections at all.
