Since most of us here are car nuts who probably dream of carbon fiber bits for our Elise's, plus a few here are musicians, I thought you'd enjoy some pics of my new carbon fiber instrument.

After recently having the opportunity to play a Luis & Clark carbon fiber cello I decided to order one. When it arrived at the local shop I dropped off the two wooden cellos (an Eastman and a German Steffens). No more wood for me.

I got it for its voice; the sound is bar none. Rings and rings with rich overtones; and the Power I think is beyond any wodden instrument I've heard or played.

It's quite a site ... I found that in person it often causes folks to suck in their breath and issue an 'OMG'. You know you're looking at something hi-tech, something from the future. Something fine, complex, and beautiful... like the Elise. My pics shot this afternoon don't do it justice.

Funny: YoYo Ma was interviewed on CNN re a series of performances he was doing in Washington DC where he was using this cello. The interviewer asked him about it and he held it up and said it doubles as a bar-b-que. Heh. My teacher calls it 'the sinister cello'.

Anyway... time for Carbon Fiber Porn:

If it sounds half as good as it looks then you got a winner!

Looks awesome!

Somehow you should pose that baby with your Elise! :coolnana:

Does it still use horse hair for the bow, or have they found a modern material for that as well?

I've got horse hair, not sure about any other material. I think some low end bows have fiberglass strands.

Interesting. I'm a bass player, but I have to gasp at 12Gs for the bass?!?!
The sound clips I heard of the bass weren't that impressive to me, but they sure do look pretty. I read that the Cellos sound alot better than the Basses, though.

12 G's is pretty cheap actually from what I've read.

6500 bux for a cello according to the website. Yet 2800 for a CF roof that doesn't play music?

In my opinion 8-9k is the sweet spot for a bass according the law of diminishing returns, though I've yet to pony up that much for a doghouse.

The cello doesn't play music either. <grin>
