Recently noticed something interesting. You can take an old iPhone, upgrade with latest iOS, add it to your Apple account, cancel the phone service, leave it on, and still track it from any iPhone or Mac.

You can buy an old one for around $100 on eBay, and with no monthly fee you can track your car if it's stolen, or you wonder what the service dept or the valet is doing with it. Just plug it into a charger and leave it in the trunk. Without cell service and the screen off, it barely uses any power.

I need to double check that it's not relying on the wifi. But the cell service is definitely discontinued.

I think that is the key...I would assume it is using the wifi feature...bascially you have a mini IPAD with only wifi.

Still haven't tested this, but I was hoping it's the same situation where you can dial 911 from any cell phone even if it doesn't have an active service contract.
