Dear Northeast Region members,

Sorry for non-Lotus related question.

What is the best & quickest way to travel to Providence, RI from Manhattan?

I've thought about the following options. * Private Air or Helicopters are not options.

1. Commercial Air: Considering the waiting at the airport, I thought it would take way too long. (Also considering from/to airport taxi ride)

2. Train: Looked up Amtrak, and no train ride back to Manhattan after 6pm...

3. Bus: Wow. It was 4-6 hr. bus ride...! I'd die if I need to stay that long in a bus.

4. Car: Thought about renting a call and driving up. I'm guessing 2-3 hr. drive?


Your thoughts? Also any good restaurant suggestions in Providence, RI would be greatly appreciated! :clap:

Not a 2-3 hour drive... more like 3-5 hours... depending on traffic/road conditions

I'll be going there for a dinner next Friday. Considering the Friday afternoon traffic & distance, should I assume it would take 5+ hrs...?

In my experience, it's about a 3-4 hour drive max. If you leave at peak traffic hours, then I-95 will become insanely congested around southern CT. Takes 2-3 hours to get to Westchester county and another hour maximum to get to Manhattan. YMMV. But the route I'm giving you doesn't tend to lend itself to traffic.


Basically, you're going to take I-195 towards I-95. Take I-95 south pretty much the whole way.

- Take exit 14 in NY off I-95 S to HUTCHINSON RIVER PKWY South

- Take Hutchinson River Pkwy to the exit of Bruckner Expwy/I-278 WEST towards the Triboro Bridge.

- Continue on on I-278 until you are on the bridge and FOLLOW THE MANHATTAN exit signs. It's very easy to miss. Stay right to be safe.

- Take F.D.R. drive Southbound and take your desired exit by street.


All in all, it's not such a terrible trip. I'll PM you my # if you get lost. I know my way around pretty darn well.


Be sure to take lots of toll money ($20 minimum).

- This road goes straight to the tunnel to mid-town Manhattan. You have the option to go west, go downtown, or go uptown.

I'll be in NYC for a business trip and taking a girl out for a dinner in Providence, RI (she lives there). I guess I'll leave around noon for a dinner.

I'm renting a Ford Fusion from Avis in Midtown that opens 24 hrs. (43rd St., b/t 2nd & 3rd) I reserved a GPS, too, in case I get lost.

I booked Hemenway's in Providence for dinner. I haven't been there (I don't know the area well), and hopefully it's a decent place.

I use to live in Providence.

Restaurants in Providence are all excellent. Most of the chefs are from Johnson and Wales. Capriccio's in the city is excellent. If you want great Italian you could also go to Atwell's Avenue, it's there little Italy area.

As for the trip between Providence and CT there really isn't much to see on 95. Once you cross into CT there is Mystic CT Seaport. Also not far is the Sub Base and the Casinos.

So if you have time, and want to make an outing of it, we can make other suggestions as well.

You'll cruise pretty good till you hit around bridgeport, CT on 95. Then you're screwed if ur traveling during anytime near rush hour.

I've never been there, but it looks as if I should!

There is an Atwell Avenue in Wheeling, WV. Still is...the sign was rusted to the pole.

The drive from Manhattan to Providence, RI was absolutely wonderful. It would've been so much nicer if I had my Lotus there with me.

I got a Chevy Impala from Avis in Manhattan. I got a GPS unit so that was very helpful.

The drive on I-95 was beautiful. For a guy from Southern California, driving through a highway with trees and snow was so nice. I'm now in love with the Northeast!

Hemenway's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar in Providence was very good. Good seafood and great service. I highly recommend it! :up:

Your direction was perfect. Didn't get lost at all.

I was worried about the Saturday afternoon traffic, so I left Manhattan around 11am, and arrived at Providence by 2pm. The dinner was at 5pm, so I had some time to drive around the town. It's so beautiful there. After the dinner, I got back to Manhattan around 11pm. The drive was very pleasant.

I hope to do this very regularlly now...
