I recently had my mechanic replace the rubber shift linkage boot on my 99 V8, but I was wondering if anyone knows where the round rubber part should go? (see where arrow is pointing in pic below).

I am thinking there are 3 possibilities:

1. It stretches over the metal ring (on the transmission).
2. It gets pushed inside the metal ring.
3. It stays loose (it's current configuration).

I'm thinking it might be #1, but I didn't want to stretch the heck out of it if that's not the way it's supposed to go.

Anyone know?

It goes over the metal, though yours looks awfully small.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if they are different for the 4 cyl vs. V8 and they sent me the wrong one? I do remember 2 in the box and I couldn't figure out where the other one would go. Now that I see the 4cyl. setup I wonder if that's it.
