Has anyone heard that SA2005 will no longer be acceptable and SA2010 will be required? Not to alarm anyone, as I haven't heard anything of the sort, but if anyone has please let me know.

I am looking to buy my first helmet and see some good prices on SA2005, but am concerned that I will need to buy a SA2010 within the next few years.

I am a complete newb when it comes to this and have only 1 track day under my belt.

Every competition and track organization can set their own regulations, but most follow FIA and SCCA rules. The standard has been no more than 2 certification periods. So, currently acceptable are SA2005 and SA2010. When the SA2015 helmets are released the SA2005 helmets will cease to be accepted. Similarly expect SA2010 helmets to become obsolete when the SA2020 helmets become available.

Thus any SA2005 helmet has roughly 1-2 years of "life" before they are made obsolete (most likely you won't see SA2015 helmets until late 2015, possibly early 2016). This would explain the lower prices.

Also note that most autocross organizations will continue to accept SA2005 beyond 2015.

Cheers,
Kiyoshi

as kiyoshi said.... - it is at the discretion of the event organizer and or the event sanctioning body. typically and in very general terms, the east coast tends to be more strict.... its 2013... sa2015 in 2 years, if your shopping, id just get a 2010. wouldn't surprise me if there are race events not taking 2005's

its the same with HANS - even if SFI requires certification... the event organizers/ sanctioning can opt in or out of the cert. requirement. lots of debate around this. harness certs are never up to debate (except maybe in autox) sfi vs fia on the dates.

around here most club autox will accept M helmets, i don't think they ever check...

As a note, some of the online helmet stores have an integrity issue. The helmet I bought indicated it was SA2010 in the advertisement. When it arrived, it only had the SA2005 sticker on the inside. I was tempted to return it, but had an autocross date looming.

That has been the case in the southeast as well, I went with a new SA2015 this spring as a result.
^Same here^
Different organizations handle this very differently.
Hell, Cascade Sports Car Club would not even allow me to participate in their HPDE in an Elise, period!
