My wife and I saw a grey whale up close today while in our boats just off the coast here in Santa Barbara. If you live nearby, I encourage you to get out in the water in your kayak (or rent one) and see if you can see it.

We first saw it when we it was only a few hundred yards offshore, right in front of the Fess Parker hotel. It wandered around blowing a lot of spouts going in and out of Fool's Harbor. It was easy to identify as a grey whale because of the knuckles on the back, the size (~45 ft.), color and because it's the right time of year. We were within about 40 yards at the closest.

As usual, there were also several seals, pelicans, etc., but this is the first time we've seen a whale while in our little boats. We see dolphins from time to time, but this was the grand prize!

p.s. don't give me the "this thread is worthless without photos". We were just talking yesterday about buying a waterproof camera to have along, just in case...
