After waiting and searching for two years, I was finally able to join the club. I am a proud owner of an Ardent Red 2005 Lotus Elise. I got smokin deal from the original owner for $27,000 with only 10.5k miles. When I went to register the car, to my surprise they valued it at $40k! I told them the government is the only entity that can rob someone and get away with it. Any suggestions?

You don't say where you live. Usually, property taxes are based on the bill of sale. Personally, I think Lotus cars should be tax free, since they beautify the streets. Ugly, boring cars should have the highest tax rates, along with heavy cars...

I live in Texas and was pretty much told the same thing at the DMV. They said it would be based on what they state says the cars are valued at, not at what I bought it for. They told me if I had the VIN they could tell me the exact dollar amount. I am suppose to register it on Monday.
