I drive mine everyday to work but again; it's only 4 miles from my home. Hardly enough to warm it up but it's such a cool ride....

One year!

In two days I hit my one year anniversary for my 2009 Lotus Elise (Saffron).

I've had a number of small issues but nothing significant. The engine is solid and the car drives well. I've had more fun in one year driving the Lotus than in 25 years driving Toyotas.

Mine is a daily driver. I have both summer and winter tires as well as both soft and hard tops. In the summer I drive my new car about 90% of the time. In the winter I drive my new car about 75% of the time. I use a 1986 Tercel on the other days. I think when my Tercel dies I will use the Lotus 100% for summer and 90% for winter. My backup in winter will be public transit.

Key highlights for the year are:

- 17,000 km (10,600 miles)
- No speeding tickets
- One cop actually leaned into my car just to praise it
- Gas mileage is about 7.2 L / 100 km
- Some nicks in the StarShield but no dents or scratches from other cars
- No flat tires, no rads blowing up etc.

The minor issues were:

1) Turn signal rate trippled - dealer replaced some wiring
2) Window developed a gap - I opened the door panel and tightened a nut
3) One carpet button broke - I ordered a set of aluminum buttons which look really cool
4) Tensioning cable on the softtop came apart - found the mechanism that holds it and put it back together
5) The plastic caps at the top where the seatbelts retract started to come loose - I glued them

I'm a DIY type of guy so these issues were kind of fun to sort out.

So overall, I'm really pleased with my first year.

Off to buy a lamb...

Hard Top opinions

I have used my '09 Elise as my DD since I got it 4 months ago, but now heading into the winter in the northeast. I do have another car to drive in actual snow, and have a second set of wheels and winter tires to use for the colder weather (but not snow). Thinking about getting the hard top, and would appreciate opinions. Leaving cost aside (for now). I've heard both it's a bear to get on, and it takes 10 minutes. It's quieter/it's louder; It seals better/it leaks too.

I realize like many things, it's probably a matter of opinion, but would nonetheless appreciate comments/thoughts/opinions from those who have one. Thanks.

Hi Dylan,
After installing/removing my hardtop 3 or 4 times, it became an easy operation and now takes no more than 8 to 10 minutes. I keep the simple tools: (a small ratchet wrench, a phillips screwdriver [power for speed] and the torq bit) in a small baggy in the trunk. You can easily lift and handle the hardtop by yourself as long as you are careful not to bang the edges and corners as you maneuver it. I spread a bit of talcum powder on the rubber seals to prevent excessive squeaks. Make sure you don't use vaseline or petroleum-based products that would 'eat up' the synthetic rubber. You WILL have squeaks no matter what you do; it's a British sports car after all. If all is installed properly you will have no leaks or wind noise. I drove my car through a hale storm and loved the cosiness of the cockpit (and the great single wiper.) That alone makes you feel like you're driving a Ferrari!!!

Hardtop

North east? I'm in Toronto so probably similar weather.

I feel much better in sloppy weather having the hardtop on than the softtop. I drive in winter with flurries but not full blown snow.

I find that the noise level on the highway is about the same. My hardtop squeaks a bit in city traffic but not on the highway. The softtop doesn't squeak. I haven't tried the trick about talcum powder but it sounds like a good idea.

In winter I give the car a quick handwash from time to time. Having the hardtop makes that easier.

I'd advise getting the hardtop. I put mine on for the 4 or 5 months of winter. I don't remove the hardtop except at the end of the winter season. So I sometimes miss the open air experience if a nice day pops up towards the end of the season.

For me it takes about an hour to put on and 30 minutes to remove but I've only done it a couple of times.

Here too the softop will make a bit less noise but I love the look of the car with the hardtop.

Riddle me this, Batman: why does a hard top list for $1,475 when ordered new as an accessory on a purchase, but $2,800+ when ordered after you've already bought a car? My idea of buying a hard top is kaput.

have now been driving mine daily for 8 months.
45 min to work & back + regular day trips + longer distance trips.

No problems.
Still in love.

I dont use my '87 Esprit as a daily driver per say, as in going to work and stuff but Ive put 2,500 miles on it since Late July of this year(about 6 weeks) when I bought it. It gets driven just about every nice day. The winters here in upstate can be harsh so Im gonna get my fun in while I can. Thats about 300 miles a week which would be considered "daily" driving type miles.

No issues with the car. Shes running like a champ. Knock on British wood... :D

I have 52K miles on my '05 Elise. Very much a daily driver. Also trips to St. Loius; Aspen, CO; Four Corners of NM; Marfa, TX, etc. No problems. Helps to wear noise cancelling headphones on the long road.

Just picked up a 05. first modification is snow tires. unless there is a few inches on the ground where clearance is an issue this thing drives great. looking forward to many trouble free miles

How big of a factor do you exige owners think having no back window is?
1. It's not a problem while driving. I use multivex mirrors to increase my side-viewing angles.

2. It's a freaking pain when backing up: you have to constantly scan between the left and right mirrors to see if anything is approaching you from the side you are not currently looking at.

Even with a backup camera, it takes me about 10x longer to backup out of my parking spot in the Exige than it does in a regular car.
