Browsing through the manual, just picked up my 06 Elise on March 17.
What gear do you leave the trans in when parked on a slope?
Personally, I've always done the following:

Facing uphill: leave trans in 1st gear.
Facing downhill: leave trans in reverse.

The owner's manual states the opposite, page 70.

My guess would be that in case the parking brake fails, it doesn’t spin the engine backwards? I’m not sure, I don’t own a manual and my Evora is IPS, but that’s the only thing I can think of.

spinning the engine backwards is bad for the timing chain, the tensioner could loosen and jump a few teeth.
