Car News briefs: Bugatti's Veyron delayed again; Bentley bidding

By AUTOWEEK

Veyron slower, and now later
On the heels of news that Bugatti plans to rein in the top speed of its 16.4 Veyron supercar to 218 mph (down from 252 mph) due to high-speed stability problems (AW, March 1), now comes word that we’ll have to wait even longer for the launch of the troubled two-seater. Originally planned for production in July 2003 and due to customers by this April, the 8.0-liter W16-powered car is now delayed for at least another 15 months before the first cars are in customer hands. Citing “demanding quality standards” imposed on the car by parent company Volkswagen, Bugatti officials confirmed at the Geneva motor show that the first example of the 987-hp car is not scheduled to roll from its assembly line in France until the second half of 2005.

I wouldn't feel too bad for the future owners. When you're purchasing cars in this stratusphere, they have extra cash lying around to buy other toys to keep them busy...like a Ferrari, or a new beach front condo, or Paris Hilton... :p

Funny thing about this project by Bugatti - on a radio show on cars, driving etc. that is brodcast here in the LA area (called, appropriately enough, The Car Show), one of the hosts told of his experience last year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, in which he sat in on one of the most bizarre press conferences he'd ever seen.

The chief guy in charge of the Veyron project comes out and he starts the press conference not by welcoming the attendees etc., or making a statement about the progress of the car, but by just tearing into them all about how they've gotten everything wrong, the car is not, as reported, delayed, or plagued by problems, there really is more than one rolling prototype, the project is not a disaster as reported, etc.etc. This guy was actually was singling out individual journalists and tearing them a new one ! He said it was absolutely surreal.
