Please reply to this thread if you are interested in coming and don't forget to list your year/model.

Update:
Everyone who is planning on attending this event, we want to make this a SAFE and MEMORABLE event.

The canyon drive will be a relatively easy cruise through the canyons. Depending on how many show up we will divide into groups to help smooth out the drive.

We ask that you respect all involved parties (car enthusiasts, public motorists, and Denny's).

Agenda:
This is a meet, greet, and drive event. We will meet at the Santa Monica Denny's location at 10am and drive-off at 11am for a 35 mile roundtrip up and down the Topanga Canyon on the 27 Highway.

Please DO NOT do any engine revving, burnouts, play loud music, immature acts, etc.

Date/Time:
November 24th 10am (The drive will start at 11am)

Location:
Denny's
1560 Lincoln Boulevard,
Santa Monica, CA

Route:
Pacific Coast Highway 1 to Topanga Highway.

He has posted on MBjunkies, mbworld, benzworld, and s2ki.com for sure. Possibly elsewhere too.

I organize the EOM Drive the following day so I don't really want to do two drives back to back in Santa Monica/Malibu area. Moreover, I'm trying to imagine the logistics of this meet and drive. Meeting at Johnny Rockets will mean people parking in the Santa Monica parking structures. Unless everyone parks in the same structure by predetermined plan, gathering up the group from the start point and keeping all together is going to be an interesting feat. Not saying it can't be done; just having a hard time imagining the staging that will have to happen (and where?) before the drive down the California Incline happens.

Good news is it is a fairly straightforward cruise up a well-known road with lots of regular traffic on it so how much trouble can anyone get into? :-D I like Topanga, but it's more suited to a cruise than for spirited. And I guess if this is a cruise, that's cool. But then there is the mention of horsepower, groupings, and skill level. I dunno.

Oh yeah... good points. I did take a gander at the map and saw that JR is in the promenade... yes, no parking and I ain't much for leaving my car in those parking lots because I've been there enough times to know better.

When you putting up the EOM drive?

To be fair, the OP did specifically state the meet up location is located on the Third Street Prom in the address. I don't have a big problem with parking my car in a structure for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning in November on Thanksgiving prime holiday shopping weekend (what could go wrong with that, right?), but what I wonder about are the logistics. And maybe he plans to post more about that later. Maybe he has a very clear plan but hasn't posted it for some important reason. Dunno.

The EOM Drive is the last Sunday of the month every month. Weather permitting, of course. I don't do sign up lists for it. I post a reminder about one week out and then again about 24-48 hours before.

Hello Notorious and RMurphy, I apologize for not posting earlier. I've modified the meet per your advice, we will be meeting in the Denny's parking lot. I've also removed the verbiage about different driving skilled groups since it is a cruise and not a spirited canyon drive.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm beginning to think I should give up my day job and become a full time fun run and drive/cruise coordinator. :)

That's very cool that the Denny's people were willing to get involved and host this for you. Especially mid-morning (breakfast time) on a weekend in their parking lot. I would have figured they would balk at the idea of 20 cars taking up half their lot (on a busy holiday weekend) belonging to folks who may or may not be customers. Very cool. Kudos to you for contacting them and getting their ok. I wouldn't have even tried, knowing how busy they can be there even on non-holiday weekends.

I think I would have gone for the Vons next door, but I'm a path of least resistance kind of gal.

I've organized between 30-40 runs for a classic british car club in LA over the past 10 years. I know you've organized a bunch yourself RMurphy. Putting together canyon drives is great fun....till someone crashes or gets arrested! But I must say, your posts in this thread have been rather rude. If you are not here to offer some real (non-sarcastic) feedback, I'd suggest you refrain from posting. The attitude you are showing may make it less likely that people will want to take part in future runs you post here.

That being said, I wish the OP good luck with his run. Organizing an enjoyable yet safe event can be rather difficult. If this is his/her first time organizing an event, please be sure to do the following;

1. Try to get event insurance. Since you organized the event, if someone crashes or gets injured, you can be held personally responsible.
2. Make sure you get the approval of the local businesses before hosting an event in their lot. Getting approval may mean that you require your attendees to buy breakfast (if Dennys is where you choose to meet).
3. Make sure you meet in a place where you can all park together. Be sure that lot is also big enough to allow you to stage run groups before entering the public street.
4. Be sure to map out the run AND conduct a 'dry run' the day before the event. Rock falls, gravel on corners that are normally clean, missing street signs, road damage, they can all wreak havoc on your event.
5. Be sure to have a pre-run drivers meeting where you stress the importance of driving to the letter of the law as well as the behavior expected of folks. Have them sign waivers after you've had your drivers meeting.
6. Be sure to enforce the rules during the drive. If someone gets out of hand, make sure you eject them. If a driver does something super bone-headed, you can be arrested. Do everything in you can to keep the hot-heads from ruining the run for the others.

I don't think I have organized quite as many as you have. Not 40. Probably closer to 30, I guess. I made the professional organizer comment mostly as a joke poking fun at myself. I suppose it's not as funny when you don't know that I've been recently involved in a few other events going on and I've been interjecting my opinion a bit more than is probably necessary. :-D Self-deprecating humor isn't as humorous when no one knows it's self-deprecating.

Anyway, I hope the cruise is a smooth one for the organizer too. When bad things happen on any drive, it makes it problematic for everyone. And of course no one ever wants to see another driver get into trouble. That's no fun.

I'm curious... did someone actually get arrested on a drive you were on? That sounds like an interesting story! Well, maybe not one shared in public though. Depends on what happened, I guess. Regardless, yes, that would suck and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, not even in my worst moments of PMS.

I wish I had seen your significant edits before posting my reply above. I'm sorry you think I was being rude. That wasn't my intention. My sense of humor is a bit different perhaps than that to which you might be accustomed. If you took it that I was intending to be rude, my apologies. But that was not at all my intention.

I'm sure as you get to know me, IF you get to know me, we'll probably get along just fine. Not saying we'll fall in love or nothing, but we'll find each other reasonably tolerable I'm sure. We're all just people.

With the exception of item 1 on your list, all the steps you recommended in your suggestions are things I do with any drive I organize. So I suspicion we probably see eye-to-eye on more things than we would differ on. But that's just a suspicion. Won't know unless we meet eye to eye, I suppose. And I do hope that I get that opportunity at some point.

;) I usually edit my posts a ton. I didn't want to seem like I was just bashing you. I wanted to offer some pointers to the OP since I get the sense this is his/her first time organizing a run.

And, we've already met...I'm pretty sure. I believe I brought my classic Mini on a run you organized a few years ago.

Nope, no one has ever been arrested on a run I've organized. My track record so far is 1 crash and a handful of moving violation tickets. The crash was on tuna canyon. A driver drove right off the steep end of a corner and rolled his car multiple times down the hill. A Park Service ( i think that is who they were) helicopter was called in to find the driver because he was not in the car when we located it. It turns out, the driver walked to the bottom of the canyon, called his wife, and she drove him home...completely abandoning his car! You can imagine what was going through my mind. I figured the guy was hanging from a tree somewhere on the hill!

You know, my memory is more steel sieve than steel trap these days, so I have to honestly say I don't recall that. I'm rather fond of the early Minis so I would think I'd remember being on a drive with one, but maybe not. When was this? I hope it wasn't one of the early drives because I did a TERRIBLE job of organizing them in the early days, even with all the best intentions and having watched how some of the SoCal Miata club people did them a whole bunch of years ago. Some of those Miata drives were so detailed I have to admit I was always amazed at the effort they went to. That was before the days of Google Maps and turn by turn nav that you can print out with the press of a button. These guys used to actually create run sheets with odometer readings and whatnot by driving it and doing the run over and over and over. That was dedication!

Ah! More in common! :-D The moving violation in my case was given to me since I was lead. *sigh* I should not say this since it's sure to jinx everything (Murphy's Law, ya know), but so far no one else on the drives has been ticketed for a moving violation. Two guys got fix-it tickets for no front plate while we were parked having lunch. One guy got pulled over once and, after they ran his license, he was given a verbal warning for front plate but that was it. The one "crash" on the drive was someone got loose in some dust along Latigo Canyon and ended up in the dirt alongside the road. As he went off he caught a good-sized rock in the passenger rocker panel. Damage was cosmetic and he had it fixed within about a week, but I felt terrible for him. Warnings about that are included as part of the pep-talk before heading down Latigo now.

That's awful about the crash on Tuna. I could easily see that happening if someone overcooks the brakes. I have to wonder what the guy was thinking that he just walked out of there and didn't let anyone know he was okay. Wow. I mean, was he stunned or something? Didn't he think you guys would be looking for him and be worried sick? Yikes.

I know we're way off topic and we've totally hi-jacked the OP's thread, but it's certainly interesting and valuable discussion though.

Awesome day today!! We had about as many cars as there were on the sign-up sheet if you took out the (Maybe)'s . The guy with the Noble didn't show! Boo!! Was really looking forward to ogling that car. Oh well.

From this forum we had Mike ("CA SLK55"), Guy ("gizx1020") and Jason ("LynxFX", in the Audi TT-RS) and myself. I think the Maserati is owned by "B R" who is also a forum member here.

At the initial meet-up point (Denny's in Santa Monica). A little of everything; Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, Maserati, BMW, Mini Cooper, S2000, Corvette.

The drive itself got off to a rocky start. We were all looking for 10-W but there is no such thing when you are that close to the coast, so we passed over the interstate, and then pandemonium with cars scattering in every direction.

Everyone individually and in small groups started making their way to Topanga Canyon and when we got there, some folks were already waiting. After hanging out at the base of Topanga for a while to allow more people to catch up, we were off!:

Break at the supermarket near Mulholland Highway. The organizer Amir ("Juggarnaut") raffled off a track day at Willow ($175 value) courtesy of Extreme Speed Track Events (extremespeedtrackevents.com) and Mike won it!!!!!

After the break we took part of Mulholland to Stunt Road, then Saddleback and finally down Tuna Canyon. I don't think anyone in the group left at that point, besides Jason and me was familiar with the road. It is always awesome to take new people down this. Very enthusiastic responses all around . At the bottom of Tuna:

So after that run led by Jason, several of us were up for another jaunt down Tuna, which means finding another way up, since Tuna Canyon itself is one-way.
I took the matte M5 and the Mini Cooper back up along Malibu Canyon, Piuma, Schueren, Saddle Back and down again to Tuna Canyon. The second run was just as fun as the first. The Cooper was keeping up with me, but the tires were squealing something fierce. I was afraid he was gonna lose it, but he never did.
Some pics at the Saddleback from the second run

All in all a great day. I had a lot of fun and got my money's worth considering that it was a 2 hour drive each way to get to this. Very fun. Tuna Canyon and the other roads around Malibu are still some of my favorites in Southern California. Let's do it again soon, guys!!!

Sorry buddy, I had changed my response to "Maybe" on Friday and true enough, I didn't make it back in time from my morning. Didn't get back until around noon-ish.

Glad you guys had fun. If you want to ogle the Noble, just say so whenever and I'll come out for a coffee or whatever. I am pretty free most of the time.
