Western NC Drives 2018

6140 Views 43 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  lt1_fd3s
When: April 21, 2018 - Meet at around 11:30a, roll out at 12:00 noon for the drive
Where: Ingles on Smoky Park Highway (153 Smokey Park Highway, Asheville, NC 28806)
Roads: Blue Ridge Parkway, US276, US215

As I'm getting settled into my Exige and warmer weather coming, I will be out on the roads of Western NC most weekends. Anyone is welcomed to join me any time but I do hope to post up a monthly lunch and drive in hopes others a little further out can plan ahead and make it. Ideally after a few months a consistent spot and time will be determined for meeting up. But if the roads I plan to drive are a little further than usual, then I'll change the meeting spot to be closer to the road.

With all that being said, my first drive I'm looking is to meet up in Enka/Candler area just west of Asheville - there are many places to grab a quick lunch and gas before we roll out. From Ingle, we will head West on Smokey Park Hwy to Pisgah Hwy (NC 151) to Blue RidgeParkway to US 276 to Brevard NC to Rosman NC / US 215 then back up to the parkway then back to Asheville.

Link to Google Map of Route

According to Google Maps, the route should take about 2 hrs on a good day - but knowing traffic, it will probably be about 4 hrs or so of driving with stops. I tend to stop after each leg of the trip for a few min to stretch, grab a drink, regroup and reorder cars if needed. So it's not a straight through drive, just nice relaxing cruise.

I'll be at Ingle around 11a to grab a sub from the deli and be available for folks who show up a little early. Feel free to come to all of the trip, part of the trip, or just meeting up. Also plenty of places to meet in Brevard mid-drive if that works for your schedule.

We live maybe three miles from the parkway. Might well join up with you.
Hey Tray,

Me and my buddy Josh (ex-Elise owner, now a 2017 Vette) will be heading down your way April 4-8 or, depending on the weather, the back-up week of April 25-29. We come down at least once a year to drive on some of those fantastic roads you have. We've done 215 and 276 multiple times. We do the Devils Steps and one of my favorites, Little Switzerland among other roads of mention. On our way down, we warm up on the Back of the Dragon and we usually end the trip with the Tail. Yes, it's definitely a "road trip" for us. Maybe we can hook up. Now, depending on which week we end up going, we have a buddy that lives in Asheville and he usually meets up with us for a ride or so and at least have dinner with us. So as we get closer, we will be monitoring the weather and we usually decide at the very last moment. If you're interested, we'll drop you a text or whatever to let you know our intentions.

Bump! Two weeks away... hopefully the weather is nice that weekend.

Hey @O LEE O, there is also a group of Canadians who come down for an annual trip to the area and meet up with us locals too - are you down in the area this weekend? I'm heading to Charlotte Sat morning for their Cars and Coffee and back to Asheville by mid-afternoon.
Not going to be able to make this one, I have to be in Detroit that weekend. I'm also going to miss the Cars and Coffee this weekend. I'll be at Barber Motorsports Park instead.

Take care,
Eldon

Eldon,

I'm sure I'll meet you before too long. Be safe and have fun!
It!,

Because of the weather, we postponed our trip until April 25th. Basically same plans just a different week. Hope the weather breaks!

I don't have anything planned right now. So I'll probably be able to make it.

Just a FYI for anyone traveling west along I-40 to Asheville. There is construction from Exit 119 to Exit 113 at night. They are grinding the asphalt off the concrete base and not doing a good job sweeping up afterwards. I can hear the small stones hitting the front bumper of the Mustang in the mornings when I go in to work. It you want to protect the paint on the front clam of your car, use US70 for that 6 mile stretch.

Update on 4/18:
Asphalt Ground off from Exit 119 to 105. It is probably going to be loud and bumpy in the Lotus. No loose rocks until you get to ~107 and they will probably be gone by Saturday.
Not sure where they will start tearing the asphalt up next at since construction just finished at exit 105 last year. Will update by Friday.

well, hopefully next Saturday has weather like this past Saturday in this area... sun was out, was in the 80s, just a beautiful day! unlike today... which was cloudy and rainy most the day.

anyway, look forward to meeting those who will make it out next week.

...also, I saw that Dolly Ice Cream shop in Brevard (at the bottom of 276) is open for the season! so if anyone else would like to, we can stop in and get some
2 days out... weather is predicted to be clear skies and close to 70 for the day. So should be a nice day for some driving.

Were you at the dragon recently? A red Exige made Killboy's weekly highlights today

Construction was up to Mile Marker 102 today. They will probably be up to Exit 100 in the morning. There are really no decent alternate routes - Exit 105 through 100 are the city of Morganton. 15 minutes on NC18 and US70 bypass 6 miles of interstate. The rocks were still getting thrown up a little around 106/107 this morning.

Nice drive today. Met one new person... we had 2 Elises, 1 Exige, and an MR2. I'll post the next drive by May 1st - might start doing Sundays if the 3rd weekend since I'm now helping with organize the Asheville Cars and Coffee.

here are a few pics from today...

Hey lt1_fd3s and y'all in NC,

We will be on the Back of the Dragon on the afternoon of this coming Thursday, April 26 and Friday morning as well. Then we'll be heading to Asheville and spending Friday night at our buddy's place. Leaving early Saturday morning, we strike west for the Tail taking numerous roads to get there. We expect to get a couple late afternoon runs on the Tail and then spending the Saturday night at the Tampoco Lodge. Getting up early Sunday morning to do our last runs on the Tail before we head back to Ashevile to spend the night before we head back to Jersey Monday morning.

So if you see a white vette, a blue Lotus and a black Porsche all pacing each other, it's probably us.

So if anybody would like to join up either for the ride or for dinner/lunch, just PM me and we can hook up.

See ya "going mobile"!
I’d really like to at least meet up with you guys when you are in or near Asheville, where we are located. Honestly having grown up on these mountain backroads the driving part is not something I’m as into but I’d very much like to meet you all and maybe show off our cars somewhere.
This coming weekend is also Deals Gap Rotary Rally... so I may drive a friend's RX7 out (since mine isn't running...) or just take the lotus, who knows? probably the lotus.

and maybe we call can meet up for breakfast one day to get the cars together
We had an awesome drive.
It wasn't that far for me to drive up from Hickory. We'd like to see an Evora.
