I saw a few postings about first cars on another thread and thought this would be an interesting topic.

For me, it was a 1978 Buick Opel S/C. 5-speed manual. White on black.

Ironic in that it was neither a Buick nor an Opel (nor supercharged, haha), but manufactured by Isuzu. rotfl

80 hp - but never kept me from lighting up the tires in high school

First car that was my own, which I purchased for $500 when I was 18 was a 1970 Dodge Dart that an airman had dropped a 440 in. He was getting deployed overseas the next day and was asking $1500 or so for the car, but no one was biting I guess. I stopped by the car lot on the base after work and he was there wondering what to do. I had just got paid and offerred to sign over my paycheck for it.

He accepted and my love of working on cars was born. That car was scary. He included a set of wheelie bars with the purchase. I had fun doing all the body work and interior work to start restoring it, but then I snapped the drive shaft a few months later. At that point I was out of money and traded it for an old Pontiac tempest that pretty much had no brakes. I only had that car a few months before I left the country and had to sell it.

74 mustang II 4/cyl 2.5 I believe... paid $250. Needed a car to work on for auto shop and this worked well for that. Car transmission would shake violently after 30mph and I wore my arms out trying to get it 5 miles to my high school because it pulled so bad to the right. $150 and two weeks later had a decent beater.

'83 Ford Escort 1,3L with 4-Speed manual and 69 wild stallions under the hood.
I think I actually made money with that car. People kept hitting me, I took the money from the insurance and fixed it up myself.
I think I welded in two entire rear ends and one front end into that car.
And after all that and 60k miles later I sold it for almost the original purchase price I paid.

1988 Chyrlser Lebaron. 4-door. The only cool thing about it was it had the digital dash.

1974 Ford Pinto, painted **** brown. No, it never caught on fire. However, it could hold a dozen high school-age girls. :p

1967 Ford Mustang GT ragtop with a big block and a 4 speed. I bought it when I was 17 for $3500 from a guy who lost his license driving like a dummy. His loss, that was a fun car.

1958 MGA. Compared to my Elise, it was a farm tractor, but I believe I loved that car more than any since, including a few 911s and a couple of early Jags. Maybe that's way I felt at home in my Miatas; they were indeed like MGs without the leaks!

Best regards to all,
Leo

This is the car I drove in high school...1985 Chevy Sprint. Cheap, 3-cylinders, 40hp...and still to this day, technically the fastest car I've ever driven (long story, LOL).

But this is the first car I ever bought myself. 1990 Miata. Bought it new in 1989, still have it...though I've modified it a bit over the years.

First Car

A 1968 blue Chevy Caprice my senior yr in HS [73-74],worked all summer for my father & this is the car he bought for me,real sporty, LOL , well what can you do, just happy not to have to borrow the station wagon or pickup to take my girlfriend out to the prom or a date. It had a 4-barrel Quadrojet [sp] carb & I'd flip the air cleaner upside down so when I'd step on the gas you'd hear those big secondary barrels roar louder, that was my " race car " -- whew, that back seat was so big & comfortable, boy, did we steam up those windows in the winter time. AW THE MEMORIES - CAN'T LIVE ON THEM - BUT YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THEM !!!!!!!!!
