I think all cars should come with an extinguisher. I dont have one in my suby but probably should. I had one in my CJ8 but I also offroaded with it and you gotta be prepared for anything out in the middle of the woods. Its one of those things that you wish you had when you need it but generaly dont think of til its to late. Fortunately lotus thought of it.
Noob question: why do so many lotus owners have fire extinguishers mounted in their cars? Are these care more prone to bursting into flames than others???
Don't get me wrong... I think they look sweet! I was just wondering if there was a specific reason they are so prevalent in these cars.
My car just caught fire at my last track event. Since I did not have a mounted fire extinguisher in my car, all I could do is find someone who did. A fire extinguisher is very imporant purchase, especially if you track day or race your car.
Where to buy? are the ones sold @ Lowes / HD any less effective than the ones sold by a cpl vendors for 4x as much? Do these come with mounts? or does one have to be fabbed up?
My car is a DD, and will see a few Autox's...hopefully I'll get to one of the big cities on a weekend they are having a track day, but I am unsure if this will ever actually happen. But I think Fires are bad, so something to stop them (or at least slow them) would be welcomed.
I guess, one better clean the mess than loose the car.
I also saw the "decorative fire extinguisher"... I almost purchased one when I noticed "decorative" on it. Who'd buy decorative fire extinguisher?
+1 on Halon. I wouldn't have anything else. A very long time ago, I had to empty a powder fire extinguisher's contents into the rear trunk of a Fiat X1/9 (loose wires from the tail lights ended up setting fire to some shop rags). The powder was extremely caustic and irritating (and the entire car reeked of it for months).
I have not mounted one in my Elise yet.
I have used my fire extinguisher to put out some one else's fire though. They were on their way to a sprint car race, in the back of their pick-up they had a car wing, wrapped in a moving blanket, weighted down with a big container of race gas. One of the guys in the truck had finished his cigerette.... flicked it out the window.... it went into the bed and caught the blanket on fire. Glad I offered my extinguisher!
BTW, make sure you properly mount your extinguisher in your vehicle, my powder extinguisher went off once when I pushed my rear seat back into place..... what is that wooshing sound I hear, and all this dust coming from behind my seat?
Just wondering, but if your own car caught fire, and someone came to help you with their non Halotron (or Halotron alternative), would you guys be pissed?

By that time, if someone else were to arrive with one - I would probably have been able to use my extinguisher first. If my own extinguisher has run out and the fire rages on then its time then they are welcome to use any kind of extinguisher at that point.
Tell me it WASN'T you: I passed a Fiero in mid-meltdown a few years ago on Eastbnd 290 between 83 and York. I had a Fire exting with me, and it was one of the few times I felt I should have stopped and didn't.....traffic had slowed to gawk and by the time I go close enough it looked to be lost.
LOL, could have been me - right area. I had a black '86GT - a car that the Fiero guys still insist isn't affected by the fire/recall problem. This was more than a few years ago, though... probably 11-12 years back. Don't beat yourself up - I was young and poor and attached to my car at the time, but the experience taught me some valuable lessons on insurance, fire prevention, police bureaucracy, and the wisdom of the masses (you have no idea how often I heard "you know they catch fire, right?") ... I wouldn't change a thing if I could!
