I already have a nice little warm spot near the fire, but a buddy of mine really likes this car after reading this forum and checking out the reviews... anyone plan on dumping on of thier deposits?

Thanks

I don't have an extra deposit. I'm just jumping in here to say that cutting in line was rude in kindergarten and is still rude now. If your buddy wants one then he'll have the option of:

a) Trying to buy a spot in line from another deposit holder (Call it the eBay solution). The problem with this is that there is no guarantee that the dealership will honor the original terms of the deal.

b) Finding a dealership selling dropped spots at a big premium. He can get the car faster and it will probably not cost much more than the eBay solution with the added benefit that he's dealing directly with someone with the power to give him a car.

c) Make an agreement with a current deposit holder to sell your buddy the car after taking deliver. This is expensive because taxes on a loaded Elise will be $2-3k (depending on location) and the seller will probably want some sort of extra compensation on top of that.

d) Get in line and wait. The downside to this being that the wait looks to be a loooong time if you get in line now.

If I weren't on the list, had the means, and needed the car ASAP then I think that I would go with solution b. It's the surest bet in my mind. I couldn't afford a premium though, so if I weren't on the list that I'm on I'd just get on another list and hope to get one before they're gone...

I've had three deposits on the books since January, and will pull the two that don't come in first. I don't see why the dealer would let me transfer them to anyone else when they can just keep the car to sell at $$market$$ price.

According to some Lotus folks, *most* people have multiple deposits. It seems like reasonable insurance when so little delivery information is available.

Wow NMRJock, so quick to judge.

If I had a deposit to spare, I would rather give it to a fellow enthusiast on the board than give it back to the dealer.

I dont know if "most" people have multiple deposits, but I know some do for the reasons you stated. Some took multiple deposits for other reasons, hence the ebay flaming!

I have two deposits. #25 and #37. When I get a car in hand the second deposit will be withdrawn, or perhaps I'll buy them both.

I sort of have two. I have one already up higher on the list at a small dealer. The other is a larger dealer who stopped taking deposits before #50 and I'm somewhere shortly thereafter. I'm just waiting for them to begin taking deposits again.

I'm in the same boat.

I previously expected my first car in Sepember '04,.... oh how the illusion faded fast. Thought an early car would be fun, but buggy. Now I'm looking for mid winter for number one, likely Saffron w/red for a drive way matched pair. Then after we swap the yellow boxster for another C-4 for the boy, I'll likely get a CO/Red one.

Some time in 2050 at this rate.

Thanks MW,

I would agree that taking extra spots to sell on ebay is wrong. However, I know if I had an extra spot I would rather have an enthusiast have it or even an enthusaist's friend. Maybe thats just my left over Military mindset of sticking together, since we are all bonded waiting for the Elise to get here.

Plus, my friend has been in and out of country alot for the goverment and has had other things to worry about.

The only 'judging' that I'm doing is to say that I think it's wrong to jump ahead in line. Some people have been waiting for the car for a looooong time and to have somebody added to the list ahead of them now because a friend made a deposit a long time ago and wants to give it to them doesn't sit well with me.
I don't believe that many dealers are going to allow deposits to be given away anyway. I know that mine says that they won't. I've heard people quote other dealers as saying similar. At that point your options become limited.
Lots of people here complain about the uncertainty of the delivery dates and allocations, but are on the list at two or three places with no intention of purchasing more than one car. That adds a lot of uncertainty.

would be willing to purchase and sell for some extra $$
Did you place your order yet? I am #7 at my dealer in West Palm and if Lotus comes out with different options in the near future, example- T-top roof, different color roof colors to match the car, etc. I would be willing to pay someone to switch parts with me so that I could get them at the factory price instead of the dealer price. At least once a month I have to go to New Smyrna Beach which is the next beach down from you. I should get my car in July or August. I'll send you a pm after I get the car in case you want to come over and see it. And no, I wont be driving it on the beach. It is too much of a pain to get the sand out of the car, although a picture of it in front of the inlet with the Ponce de Leon lighthouse in the background would be cool.
