Assuming they haven't hit the warning springs, what makes brakes squeal?

My newish pads on my MR2 (Porterfields R4-S) squeal a bit at one particular pressure - not before and not after (no squeal it I squeeze the brakes more or less than that one point).

Why is that? Is there a remedy?

As I understand it, the squeeling is created between the pad and the shim surfaces (and shim to shim). They make a special anti-squeel goo just for this purpose. Different amounts of pedal pressure results in different clamping forces on the shims, thus different squeeling.

You can make almost any brake pad, even all out track pads squeak free with the gluey glop stuff that goes on the backing plate. It won't live through the heat of a track event (fronts) but it can be reapplied if desired. It will last just fine on the street or for auto-x and enthusiastic street endeavors. Squeaks don't bother me much. But folks continually asking about it *does* bug me.
