Place holder thread for Lotus cars and teams in World Challenge 2013. Possible two teams racing Lotus Exige I4 in middle class (GTS). Outside chance of Exige V6, probably in top class (GT). Outside chance for Evora in middle class (GTS), most likely by a 3rd team. Stay tuned.

How cool would it be to have Exige I4, Exige V6, and Evora all in the same race, maybe even the same class?!!!?? :panic: Predictions of "fastest Loti" among the three? Winning team? Winning driver(s)?

That would definitely be cool and it'd be interesting to find who the teams/drivers would be if it happen

I intend to take on some racing duties this year, not just team owner / test driver / team manager / engineer / truck driver / gofor this time around. And looking to have fewer jobs, particularly for events I'm racing. But I don't expect the owner / driver to be fastest driver on the team. Podium maybe ... top step should be younger, pro driver. Driver line-up TBD.

Another competitor in World Challenge GT.

I just spoke with 2nd team planning on full season run of Lotus Exige I4 in WC GTS and their plans looking good. I'm looking good for partial season in WC GTS. Testing for both teams underway.

Pirelli World Challenge

Boston, MA - Black Swan Racing is proud to announce that it will contest the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge GT Class Championship with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. The SLS AMG GT3 is a purpose-built racing car, based on the SLS AMG road car, affectionately dubbed the “modern Gullwing,” and has yet to race in the US. Tim Pappas will continue as both driver and owner, alongside several members of Black Swan Racing who will continue on with the team’s sixth year of professional competition. The team is a two-time class champion in the American Le Mans Series.

For Pappas, the opportunity to help usher in a new chapter of Mercedes-Benz AMG competition in North America is a welcome one. “Black Swan Racing is honored to be a part of the AMG Customer Sports program with their amazing SLS AMG GT3,” stated Pappas. “Ever since driving the SLS AMG GT3 in the 2011 Dubai 24 Hour race, I have tried to find a series to campaign this car in the USA. I am very excited that the Pirelli World Challenge has embraced the FIA GT3 specification cars for their GT Class. These cars are the natural fit for this series, and a fantastic option for a team like Black Swan. We don’t want to build our own cars, nor spend time figuring out how to develop a home-built racecar. There are now 14 manufacturers that are building to this spec, which is impressive and a bold statement about the future of this class. Plus, Europe has enjoyed extremely large GT3 fields, close racing, and fan appreciation for the class. Pirelli World Challenge will be a spectacular place to be in 2013 and I hope to be in the running for the championship with the SLS AMG GT3.”

The AMG Customer Sports program offers teams the ability to buy a purpose-built racing car, which upholds the same quality and engineering excellence as all Mercedes-AMG products, at an attractive price. Further, the AMG Customer Sports program includes an internet-based portal that provides teams the ability to receive the latest technical bulletins, service update information and streamlined parts ordering. That means Black Swan can focus on racing, rather than logistics.

For Uli Fritz, Manager of AMG Customer Sports, Black Swan is a great fit for the brand’s move into Pirelli World Challenge.

”We are happy to welcome Black Swan Racing in the AMG Customer Sports program. It is a great opportunity to enter the U.S. market with such an experienced team and to add North America to the list of continents the SLS AMG GT3 is racing in. The U.S. market is very important to the AMG brand and we are looking forward to see the SLS AMG GT3 perform on the challenging race tracks around the country.”

Black Swan Racing will take delivery of its 2013 SLS AMG GT3 at a three-day test in Portimao, Portugal, beginning the 23rd of February. From there, the car will be flown to Boston for final preparations before its debut at Round One of the Pirelli World Challenge Series on the Streets of St. Petersburg, March 23, 2013.

Just learned that dog rings will be allowed in the Exige I4 for WC GTS. Other team will focus on testing dog rings and we will continue testing our 6 speed syncro that had around 50 lap mean time to failure in 2010 in WC GTS spec (failed at both Long Beach GP and again at Mosport, but able to change tranny overnight for both events), but has now done around 500 laps at full torque and no metal in fluid during routine tranny fluid replacement (every test day), so maybe reliable enough to race for 2013.

I would prefer a sequential or dogbox as I'm a left foot braker from formula cars and I feel the Exige I4 would handle better with left foot breaking (easier to blend brake and throttle at turn-in and elsewhere) and I'm considerable faster / smoother left foot breaking compared to right foot braking (asking the right foot to do double duty of braking and blipping and expecting to excel at both while left foot has easy job of depressing clutch ?!?) Plots of brake pressure typically show smooth traces for left foot brakers. Consider that everyone in F1 is a left foot braker - last right foot braker was Reubens, i.e., old school. (Still a big fan, Rubens )

I don't really mind down grade from sequential to H-pattern dog rings (don't lose much time) and still a massive step up from syncros, but worried about reliability of new tranny and if enough time to test and develop before start of season. Both teams agree that preferable that we run the same tranny spec, so we'll probably jointly decide what tranny looks most developed / reliable for start of season and run the same tranny. Might be running same engine spec as well.

Here's a pic of tranny failure at Long Beach GP. One of 8 tranny failures that year if I recall (which I prefer not to dwell upon as too painful a memory $$$)

Problems getting the correct size Pirrelli tires (slicks and rain tires) for the Lotus Exige I4 for World Challenge as no other car in the field wanting to run our sizes, particularly stagger front to rear and World Challenge / Pirrelli looking for commitment to produce and import into the US.

Other team solved the problem by putting in 2 car entry for entire season.
No ETA on arrival and would come by boat, but both teams eager to start testing with Pirrelli (was Toyo in 2010 when we last raced with WC) so we'll both get a few sets by airfreight to start testing.

Will be interesting to see relative performance of Yoko slicks (LTS, S04, S01) vs. Pirelli on an Lotus Exige at WC GTS spec. We had significant wheel spin with the standing start with the Toyo's in 2010, but still better acceleration than back of the field of GT cars!!! At Long Beach, Tyler McQuarrie starting from pole in WC GTS (middle class) passed 3 GT cars (top class) before turn 1. Must suck to get passed by "slower" class car. Slowest GT car (a Porsche) doesn't repass until affter 1 full lap. rotfl

Expecting to announce LPL Motorsports program on Feb 9/10 at Lotus of Newport Beach, CA, concurrent with their Evora Test drive program. LPL Motorsport Lotus Exige S race winning car from Long Beach Gran Prix World Challenge GTS will be on display and might sound off at 104.5 dB (if not too loud for noise ordinances in Newport Beach.)

Aero testing for 2013 WC GTS update for Exige I4

Who has aero data for Exige I4, old body and 2010+ aero, stock and various aero packages? What I have on the car now was for Red Line and wouldn't be legal in WC GT, much less GTS, so got some work to do.

Anybody got a 2010+ front clam and/or wing for sale, some body damage OK as I'll just be using to make molds.

Anybody got a 211 wing that I could borrow for testing vs. my current wing

Update, we finished in the top ten at St. Pete with World Challenge, and were looking strong at Long Beach (new car, more power) until Jim got hit, car started overheating and second gear ate itself.

COTA short course with Pirelli World Challenge in three weeks. we will be quick

@Taggart Autosport - a few Lotus owners came by the pit last Sat in Long Beach and there wasn't much activity going on, but we noticed a couple of you were sitting in the back and one gentlemen stood out as familiar, but I couldn't place him at first.

Then it hit me, it was Dave Simkin. I was curious if he was just there as a friend lending support or there in some official capacity (i.e. technical support from Lotus)?

We will have two Exiges entered at Lime Rock (for Jim Taggart and Tom Long) as Jim is off a 6th place finish in Detroit Pirelli World Challenge. There is also a Lotus Car Corral at Lime Rock (see their site for details) and we will be doing a full on paddock tour on Saturday morning at 8:45 - but Lotus owners can really stop by whenever and just ID yourselfs.

Super cool Detroit video:
- love the way the car sounds on grid!

Y'all were super busy at COTA the other month--I could tell--so I didn't bother any of you.

However, I do want to wish you all the best of luck at Lime Rock!
