I actually drove out this past weekend to look at & drive that Exige. I met with Julie on Sunday and spoke to Paul over the phone.
Sadly I saw a few things that made me a bit concerned about the Exige at that price for example...
Driver / Passenger Door - Both doors had been removed at some point - Torque paint line no longer lined up.
Side Pods / Fuel door - Both of the side pods and Fuel door had been painted to match (Looked great from afar!). But the bolts were painted over on the Fuel door so if you ever had to remove it you would have to strip and repaint it. The Side pods showed signs over overspray (Red) on the black grills.
Check Engine light - While on a test drive the car threw a CEL for a cat inefficiency code from the after market exhaust system. Not a huge deal but needs to be addressed.
Tires - Rear tires were totally shot - at the wear bars. Fronts needed to be replaced very soon. Paul told me that the tires on the Exige were in great shape! And they only ever made those tires for the Lotus.... Funny I had the same tires on my Ariel Atom....
GoPro Mount - We found a GoPro mount stuck to the roof of the interior of the car. Wouldn't have killed to remove that before putting the car for sale...
Auto Cross Champion Sticker / Participant - Located on the windshield... probably also could have been taken off.
Fenders - All four fenders had cracked fender paint from running oversize wheels / tires. If you ever wanted to wash the car you would have to be extremely careful as the paint was cracked and starting to peel on all four fenders.
License Plate Frame light - The right side plate frame light was cracked and hanging off.
None of these issues were super alarming aside from the doors. I had a nice conversation with Paul over the phone pointing out these flaws I had found and was expressing that I thought the price needed to reflect these imperfections.
Paul proceeded to tell me just how rare this Exige was and scoffed at the idea of lowering the price because he gets calls on it every day! It has been on his lot for 3+ months according to Julie. When I didn't agree to pay asking price for the Exige Paul hung up on me. I walked out of the dealership and drove 400 miles home. An hour into the drive home Julie from the dealership called & texted me saying that Paul didn't mean to hang up me... It took you an hour to tell me that? I responded with I am no longer interested and Thank you for taking time out of your Sunday to meet me at the Dealership (Sunday is by appointment only at Newport Coast Auto)
Anyhow... the search is on for a clean example of a Exige...
Incredible that a dealer would equate "calls on it every day" with someone who has driven 400 miles to drive and inspect the car! At that point a dealer should expect negotiation and the things you pointed out are all fair to consider in the price.
I'm seriously considering selling mine. It only has 1890 miles and has never been tracked, raced, driven in rain, and has always been parked in the garage under a sweet custom indoor cover from Specialised Covers. It's black on black and may be #28 of 30, but it is actually the very last one. I'm the original owner and the dealer I originally bought it from in St Louis told me he specifically asked for the last one. I was disappointed when it was #28, but I compared the VIN to the #30 and I have a higher VIN #. Absolutely no scratches or any blemishes.
