Is wearing a helmet on the street illegal?

Excuse the really strange question, I just had a completely random thought as I finally bought myself a helmet for auto-x'ing/HPDE's (no more borrowing!) and simultaneously drooling over the Ariel Atom.

Would it be illegal to wear a motorcycle/road racing helmet on the street? Perhaps it would add to the race car-like feeling of the Exige/Elise and a little bit of safety during more... spirited driving experiences. I'm sure cops would love it.

Or maybe you'd just look like a tool.

:shift:

I contemplated this back when I owned a Saturn. Silly, I know, but I needed a helmet anyway (I ended up not getting one).

But in an Elise or an Exige, I don't think it's strange at all. Everything else on the road is twice your size. I don't know if it's illegal - there might be something in the law that says you're obstructing your view of the road. Try it; considering the size of the car, the cop might understand where you're coming from.

Just drove about 2000 miles looking at this for most of the trip:

Passed many a cop, but no tickets for the Stig in his helmet...

Man, that's why I can't find you anywhere, Alan!

I thought about doing it too, back when no one knew what the Elise was. Along with my fire proof boots and gloves. I can't imagine why a cop would give you a hard time for extra safety precautions.

I know it is in ohio. Back when i was in high school a friend of mine on the football team with me wore his helmet home just to be funny, and the cop gave him a ticket for wreckless driving and he said that the helmet was obstructing his view strange.

But i guess if you have an open top car it would be that bad

So do I, I just thought it was funny, but i'm sure if your car has a roof any cop will pull you over but if it is open they might not care

It falls under the field of vision requirement for driving. When I certify a patient fit to drive I have to document how many degrees of peripheral vision they have available. So legally a case can be made that the helmet obstructs peripheral vision, but then that has to be proven.

I do remember the VW busses with their Safari Windshields, wide open(nice!). I believe that you have to have some sort of wind, debris screen, such as THE STIG's full face helmet shield. If you go without a helmet you have to have goggles as I recall. You could take a rock to the head though:eek:. With all of the old Jeeps (lay down windshields)and weird vehicles on the road I'm pretty sure there is some leeway.
Neil, your spyder looks awesome. Some really neat ideas there. I like a car to be basic and lean:clap::up::p Crickets........................

What about wearing a helmet in a street legal car that one has installed a roll cage in? (concern about hitting your head on the head room restrictive roll cage)

You will look like the mother of all tools if your car has a roof/windshield.

That being said I wear one on my motorcycle all the time (but I don't wear my seatbelt which would get me an instant ticket if I were in a car. Go figure. lol)

I think thats a elise -poke-

its so funny I was thinking the same thing about when driving in the Elise and wearing a helmet, I think the helmet is a nice look and it is safer whenever you feel your going to be taking longer trips, it might get a bit weird though at night, so I wouldnt recommend a tint one at least for the evening.

Looks aside, I can't imagine it being illegal to wear a DOT approved helmet while driving. They make you wear one on a bike, but you are prohibited from wearing one in a car?

I think there should be a law passed to clear up this issue. They should call it the "John Olerud" rule.
(most of you won't get that joke :coolnana:)

$ hit, I just got two sets of Sabelts(very nice, wide, 6pt) and I'm pretty sure that they have a large round twist with a small lever sort of a setup. I do want to stay street legal if possible so they may have to go... :wallbang:

I was planning to cut my Sector111 Polycarbonate windscreen lower than it originally came but a little higher than THE STIG did on the "Spyder". Maybe @10" or so. Good news on the windshield loophole.. So as long as you have a windshield(of any size) a helmet is optional I would assume. If you look back at the Callaway Speedster, Porsche Speedster, etc, etc.. they all have cut down windscreens and I never remember seeing people wearing helmets while driving them.

In MI, I know for a fact that it is legal. My friend (A Porsche Spyder Replica owner) actually called the State Highway Patrol here to ask before driving to a track day on a very cold morning.
