Center Caps

I just got some stock wheels to replace the oversized chrome Asanti wheels that came on the car when I bought it.

The wheels didn't have any center caps so I was looking to order some. The only ones I found that I knew would work are the stock ones that are well over $100.00 + so I am having some made out of aluminum.

Here are some crappy phone pictures of the prototype made.

The bolt in the pictures are just for the prototype so it was easy to remove the cap during the fitting process.

I am having a set made that will be powder coated black, with either a punisher skull or a star similar to what is on KMC Rockstar wheels. The design will be raised and have the powder polished off leaving the aluminum.

I am curious what other people have done for center caps.

And yeah wheels are filthy. That happens when you daily drive here in the Pacific Northwest.

Very cool! Can't say I'd be a fan of a star or skull, but do what you think looks best on your car!

I need new center caps for my wheels too, I never thought about making my own (I have a lathe and small CNC mill). Might be cool to CNC the Lotus logo on the center of those, hmmmm :) I might have a weekend project coming up.

While I am no expert in copy-wright laws I imagine it is illegal to sell these with the Lotus logo. So this version is only going to be used for my personal use.

We would consider selling some of these with no logos or with possibly simple logos and powder coated if there is enough interest.

As the stock plastic ones are, I think, $130.00 ish, plus shipping. We are thinking about $100.00 a set but that decision has not yet been made.

I have 3 sets currently and going to powdered them different way. One will be all black, one will have the logo black with the rest polished, the third I am thinking about getting anodized.

I will post pics. of finished products.

I'd bet you could sell those as it is not the actual Lotus logo. You have the typical Brasilian knock off logo there with the small "c" not extending through the "B" as it does on the official one. Just sell them from Brasil.

RoadDad,

Thanks for that info. I am fairly new to the car and didn't realize the image I had was not correct. I just did a google search and took the first thing that came up that looked right. Oops..

Guess these must go in the garbage ;)

Picts with powder coating and on car.

Here's what I got on the car now. I kind of like the understated look of the all black. But I am still going to have a set decked so the lotus is all black. I am also looking at having a set annodized gun metal grey.

I know wheels are filthy, but daily driving here in the Pacific Northwest wheel are dirty often this time of the year.

I guess I will have to read the forum rule about selling stuff. My buddies shop is not that big and probably won't get enough business here to justify being a sponsor. Don't want to break any rules.

So JJ714 was nice enough to part with one set of his original center caps as they were not a perfect fit with our wheels. He wanted to know if they would fit on the LSS wheelset as they were designed based on the 8spoke design base wheel.

So I told him I would take them off his hands and post pics of them on my car. There is a fit issue with the rears, but the fronts are a nice touch. The rear caps would not fit over the half shaft stud that stuck out the middle of the LSS wheels. That is why the OEM center caps on the 05 Lotus was raised, to make room for the stud.

But with closer consideration I decided that that I could cut the end of the half shaft off that was sticking out of the LSS wheelset and still leave plenty of thread for the half shaft nut to thread back on safely and easily.

Here are photos of the the caps on the car with the wheels on the car, and YES I FINALLY got my car washed and waxed. Not finished, but done for now. :)
