Are you referring to the vents on the front (bonnet)? If so, they are functional and exhaust the hot air coming off the radiator. That hot air then travels over the fender and around the windscreen. One of the great beauties of Lotus design is that design features typically have function.

At front the "hood" is the panel that extends from the top edge of the bumper to the base of the windscreen and between the fender vents. When the release the "hood" pivots at the front to expose the needed brake mechanicals, reservoirs, etc.
