You might try an oil change first. Wrong viscosity or any additives (like a friction modifier) can hurt the VVT valve’s feelings so your camshaft isn’t where it thinks it should be. I had this and correlated to a moly oil additive that changed how the valve responded especially at high RPM.

If it is a CPS, it’s a simple remove and replace as long as you can get to it, 10mm and a wire harness clip

 

I just did my full service of the oficial dealer, and got this after around 2 months . So, the oil is new. They did the full service.

 

Changing out a composition sensor is extremely straight forward. One screw and one wire harness clip each. Getting to the bank that faces the trunk is a bit more involved since you have to take the lining of the trunk out and remove some heat shield panels, but I did it myself to replace all four recently. The Toyota part number works the same as the stock part number. Highly recommend changing out the sensor yourself if you go that route.
