Emira track impressions

I have quite a lot of experience driving at the track, and since my Emira is now broken in and has some fresh brake fluid from the dealer, I decided to take it to Laguna Seca.

My car is the V6 with 6MT and the touring suspension and tires (Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3).

Having heard that the stock pads don't hold up well, I put in a set of EBC SR11's.

First off, the tires stink. They can't handle the heat on a cool December day. I get maybe 6 laps before grip falls off noticeably and they get greasy. Also, the SR11's completely overpower the tire grip, even before overheating.

You also need to run high temperature fluid. My fresh fluid resulted in a soft pedal, but the brakes worked. The calipers got hot enough that I melted off all my little rubber bleeder nipple covers, and they went from being a bright red to a dull brown.

The car itself is nicely balanced. I found that I could manage under/oversteer just like in a big, fat Elise. You definitely feel the weight of it in the tight turns, but it's remarkably capable coming out of a turn. The Elise has this "hooked" feeling throughout a turn, the Emira is kinda unsettled going in, but once you get on throttle coming out, it feels great. You have to drive it differently, since you have more power and more weight; braking happens earlier, turnin happens earlier due to bigger slip angle, and the difference in engine torque means you need to manage the throttle more, no pinning it to the floorboard.

The heavier car, power steering, and huge wide tires means you can't feel what it's doing as well, but the absolute grip is pretty nice. Due to the lack of feedback, it's easy to overdrive the car.

So, I enjoyed the hell out of it. My laptimes (1:45 ish) aren't bad for a completely stock car on street tires. I get my Elise down to 1:41 on street tires and 1:38 on slicks, but that car's got a proper alignment, great tires, Nitrons. There's lots of potential here, but I'm going to have to do some work.

In track mode, when the weather got cooler, I exceeded the Laguna sound limit. When it was warmer mid-day, the car stayed below 92dB, but once a cold front came in, I blew a 94.9 which sends you packing home.

Interesting note: Track MPG = 3.9, based on miles on odometer divided by miles. The computer said 4.2 mpg. It's hilarious to see 50 miles range remaining on a full tank.

So, before I track it next, at minimum, I'll do the following:
  • Castrol SRF
  • More camber
  • Proper tires
  • Better bleeder nipple covers

Longer term:
  • Suspension, the touring one doesn't cut it.
  • Some kind of seats + harnesses, so I don't flop around.

I'd post video, but my stupid Smartycam recorded all the times I was parked in the paddock and turned off for the laps. Go figure.

I took the Emira to Laguna Seca again. This time, a few changes.

  • EBC RP1 pads, since the SR1's had too much friction. These were great!
  • Castrol SRF brake fluid. No more spongy brake pedal.
  • Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 LTS tires. OEM sports suspension tire, combined with my touring suspension.

The first half of the day was pouring wet, so it was some serious car control practice. The Emira has nice chassis dynamics, and you can feel it starting to step out well before you need to intervene, so catching a slide is very easy. It feels like there's much more time to react than in my Elise on Nitrons. Using track mode, I did not notice the stability control intervening at all, but I'm also used to driving an Elise and never putting myself into a situation where it would be necessary. The traction control being off by default lets you spin a wheel if you want. This thing really does have the handling characteristics of my Elise, just in a big fat boat of a car, but the dynamics are the same.

The RP1 pads were much better, but as they get really hot, the friction coefficient changes a lot, so it's really easy to overwhelm the tire grip with the brakes. The Elise has the opposite problem, in that the tiny brakes are usually your braking weakest point, while in the Emira, it's definitely your tires.

Once the track dried off in the afternoon, I pushed the car quite a bit harder, and I managed to get it into the high 1:43's. I'm having a hard time feeling the tire slip angle, due to the fat car and less steering feedback. I suspect the touring suspension really cuts down on the car's communicativeness on the track, but never having driven a different Emira, I don't know for sure. The PS2's definitely had much better feel than the touring F1 Supersports, and they held up much better to heat. Since the track was never fully dry, I can't compare laps with the Supersports, but I was a tiny bit slower compared to dry track on them. On the street, the Cup2's are also super comfy with the touring suspension.

I'm starting to figure out the heel-toe geometry here, and I do it well 4/5 times. It's much easier when the brake pedal is firm with better fluid.

I can't get my AIM SmartyCam working right. The logger never triggers it, and if I turn it on manually, it's mssing the data feed from the Solo2, so sadly, there is no good video to post, just washed out, overexposed nonsense. I regret buying this instead of a GoPro.

You show the touring suspensions limits even in the wet....Too soft for any real track duty. Thus the heavy feeling due to the vague spring load feel.
God I hate it when folks compare an Elige to other cars....only fair comparison is a 4C and that is best compared to a V6....which we never got. Try to remember it was slow as dirt above 130indicated (120mph). At those speeds, your Emira will eat an Elige with anything short of 300+hp...and none of the BOE Rev 300 iterations ever passed me except in the hands of a few true experts.

New member here, but long time (circa 1991) Laguna Seca driver. A legit 1:43 is hauling butt.

My most recent dry PB there is a 1:43.25 in a Corvette C5 Z06, stock suspension and engine, but 315/30/18 square Falken RT615K+. My pro coach Mikael Miller put down a 1:40.20 in my car, and full NASA Spec Corvette race cars lap at 1:37.

Nice work!

One member posted he installed Tillet B-10 seats. I have them in my Elise. They truly fit like a glove and are designed for three way belt or harness and for me eliminated the need for harness.
