Does anyone know of any way to check if a vehicle has a lien for free? I’ve heard there might be some databases or government sites that allow this, but I’m not sure which ones are reliable or if they even give that info for free.

Carfax but it's not free. Spend a few bucks in addition to a PPI before purchase. The buyers guide is at top of the Evora forum.

Here in the U. S., in every state I’ve been in, if there is a lien on a vehicle (at least when the lien holder is a financial institution), it is noted on the title. Once the lien is satisfied, the owner can have that note removed. Is this not the case in Canada?

Also, in the USA, when I’ve had a lien, the lien holder actually holds the title, not the car “owner”, so if you’re looking to buy, but the seller can’t show you the title, it’s likely at the bank. Once the lien is paid, the title is stamped as paid, and sent to the cars registered “owner “
