Sector 111 / Inokinetic Micro Mirror Installation Problems

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had any experience good or bad regarding the Sector111/ Inokinetic Micro Mirror? The stock rear view mirror is much too large, IMO. I want to replace it with someone smaller. I think the Micro Mirror is the only aftermarket choice available. I have heard the Micro Mirror installation can be very difficult.

Thanks, very much.

Scott.

It's not hard to install the micromirror. The difficulty is removing the existing mirror and it's not really very difficult.. There's a tab tat must be released between the mirror post and the top of the windshield that can only be activated by placing a coin or something thin between the windshield and mirror. Then the mirror must be slid up the windshield, any rotation of the post can crack the windshield.

I really like my micromirror except for two things. 1- its' stiff and hard to rotate and 2-there is no night time position.

The alternative would be to use the existing post and a smaller mirror, like from a VW bug. Instructions are on this site. Again, the most difficult part of removing the mirror is involved.

I have a friend with the micro mirror that likes it. When I bought my Elise it had no rear view mirror and I was considering the micro mirror, but I've found that I really don't miss the rear view at all with the side mirrors properly adjusted.

Hey, thanks LT members, me73 and CloudySkys for your helpful advice/ info. I am glad to hear the Micro Mirror is not all that difficult to install. I have heard about using the 2 nickels taped together to remove the OEM mirror from the base.

I do not think the lack of night driving setting will bother me. Hope it rotates/ adjust easily.

Thanks, guys.

The Micromirror is small enough that it takes only a slight adjustment of my head to avoid the lights of following traffic. The reason I have one is that I can't see anything out of the right side of the windshield with the stock mirror.

Note that there are two configurations of the Micromirror, depending on model year. The mounts are different. Previous comments are applicable to the 2005/06 car. The 2007+ mirror is easier to change.

I'm having difficulty removing the mirror, I can't get the retaining pin to release. I've tried a paint can tool, a screw driver, nickles (2 and then 3 taped together). I tried a bit of WD-40. Basically everything I could find searching through posts. It makes me wonder about the pin. Where do I insert the tool? Above the pin and pull in towards the car (see picture),

below the pin and push outward, or press the pin inward with the plane of the windshield? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I got the mirror and black cover off. Still no luck with getting the post to release from the plinth.

when I did mine way way back, I shimmed while looking from the OUTSIDE of the car. make sure the shim goes between the windshield glass and sliver piece.

from the picture, it looks like its stuck halfway out. I simply shimmed the sliver piece so it cleared the plastic piece on the glass. then it just slid down, it required no effort at all.

if yours became stuck, I would slide it back up so it "retained" again. shim and push mirror arm gently out toward the windshield while sliding down parallel to the glass.

ps: becareful!!! are there cracks forming on the glass in your second picture???

Thank you. I saw the little lines also, not sure if they are cracks or not, they are not visible with the naked eye. I may just reinstall the OEM mirror. I can't seem to get it and don't want to cause damage.

Edit: Not a crack. Small piece of fuzz that reflected the flash

Fear not if you get a crack(s) a good windshield repair person can fix it. When I bought my car two years ago it had a crack from PO installing a micro mirror years earlier. It came out a couple of months after purchase and micro mirror was sitting on the floor and had taken a chunk out of the inner laminate and the crack extended to over 12" on the outer laminate. Brought to repair place and had them reattach the plinth and fix outer cracks with their UV adhesive. There was a patch of inner skin of glass that had crumpled so I used WEST G Flex epoxy that has strength and flexibilities and filled the missing inner section. It was immediately to the right of the plinth and the size of a couple of dimes. Not perfectly clear but you can't see it anyways and the original crack you can't see at all. At $75 dollars it was a bargain compared to almost $1500. It's held for two years thru 110 deg last summer no problems so far.
