Emira warranty void if SPORT mode is used

I was reading up on the Emira owner's manual and under engine run-in it states that the warranty can be void if you use any drive mode other than TOUR in first 1,000 miles. What do you all think of this statement? Why would the drive mode matter as long as you are mindful of the 4,000 RPM threshold they call out? If LOTUS doesn't want you using one of the car's features, why wouldn't they simply have that mode locked out until the specified mileage? What if someone didn't read that section of the manual.... SOL when it comes time for a warranty repair?

Back in my Evora days, Lotus required an ECM readout to be sent after the first 1,000 miles to ensure warranty instatement. Is this going to be the case for the Emira too?

Mode has ZERO affect on motor. Its how you use it......a proper run in should run car thru its revs, just NOTHING sustained. I always considered adding 1K every couple hundred miles as fine. Bouncing off the rev limiter, not so much. Even on my rebuild when I asked they said DRIVE it, just don't don't balls to the wall day 1. So I drove it home 90 miles from dealer. Drove it around a few days, drove it 240 miles to WGI. Took it easy first few sessions as I settled back in, adjusted shifter cables etc. By that afternoon, she went back to work. probably had 500 miles on her by then...time to make sure the rings are fully seated. It appears they are as nervous about those damn precats as anything else. Cars revved hard at dealers have been known to blow out those stupid pre cats............that is the achilles heel of the Toyo motor.. If I go Emira, I won't wait forever to go headers this time as I strongly suspect that failure was a major contributor to my engine issues.

Mode CAN absolutely have an affect on the motor if the throttle map is tied to the mode (and it usually is). A sport mode will likely allow higher throttle opening at low revs, so restricting you to Tour provides a little insurance that break-in is gentle. Do I think this should be necessary? Nope. Just disagreeing with the statement that mode has no affect on the engine when sport mode gives more aggressive throttle mapping.

Throttle opening is still respective to your foot. Instead of 50% throttle at 50% foot, you get 50% throttle at 25% foot. I stand by my statement, and its about sustained revvs...Its a fuckin Toyo motor!!!

Exactly could. Tranlated, no need to use sport mode as you should not be using WOT yet. Independent of modeIf WOT occurs at 60-75% in sport mode, and you can have just as much fun using 60-75% of the pedal travel in normal, why bother...THey now know there are some parts that need time...I fully predict its the pre cats!!!

besides, ECU will tell them all they need to know, peak, transients etc...Never let them do one................at least i didn't have to back in 2014. Joys of having it shipped from CA to CT

That's false. On the day I took possession the dealer had me run through all the modes with him, as he should to verify I know what they do. Now if you are jet setting in track or sport thats another thing.
"could" lol
Not lol worthy. That use of “could” gives Lotus a lot of latitude. You can bet the use of “could” was thoroughly vetted by Lotus’ legal team to give Lotus leverage.

There was a big debate about this subject in the Emira group where dealers 'could' void the warranty if you fail to adhere to their break in procedure. Of course, they are a bit flexible on this matter.

While I don’t think dealers would go as far as voiding it because they want the consumer base to grow (unless they’re complete assholes), it's not really worth the risk of them having something to use against you, so you're better off just driving it in touring mode.

Literally, one week of daily driving; it’s not going to kill you to jeopardize your entire factory warranty. The ECU logs every single parameter, including engine speed, throttle, modes, temperature, and etc., during this break in, so the dealer can see everything.

Could is CYA for warranty issues giving them wide latitude with those couple of paragraphs. "Don't forget to idle your engine for a couple of minutes after a high speed run before turning off" could be auto denial of coverage for many......lol

STUPID!!! NOT WORTH THE EFFORT BUT I'D LOVE TO SEE THE STATS ON CARS THAT GO FULL SONG AT 500 V 1000 MILES............................... bueller, bueller

btw void warranty for motor but a cracked dash....they'd be in for a battle............

He truly did. Weird right? I’m calling him after the 4th to discuss further. Will post what I find

That would be great. It's just a little insurance on top of the warranty in case they or another dealer deny you the warranty work due to improper break in procedures. I'm sure they're aware and somewhat flexible about it because they know most of their customers can't resist toggling that sport button for 1000 miles. It's bound to happen lol.

I'd love to see in writing where use of sport cancels your warranty. They run a dump at 100miles looking for sustained high rpm use. That is all they care about. It isn't even good for a motor to troll for a 1000 miles. For 40years, I have always added some rpms every 100 miles. By 500 miles they have always seen a full tach, just nothing sustained. In simple English, this means run it thru a few gears...have some fun. They are most concerned about the folks that pull out of the showroom and beat the crap out of it. Why does everybody get so OCD about thus. It's a Toyota motor built to last 300000 miles, not some hyper motor.
