Rim Chip

Hey Guys,

I just noticed a really odd chip on my rim. It's the driver's rear rim so I know I didn't curb it (plus I never park on the street) and there's not a mark at all on the tire side wall.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Not sure if it could be from a flaw in the the rim or how it could have happened.

From the shape of the gouge, it is an errant rock chip. Rare for a rim but not unheard of. I've had a few over the years. Nearly all of them occur at the rear wheels as the rocks are kicked up from the front tires... Every so often one of them will nick the edge of the rear wheel at speed.

Remember, the rear track is wider and the camber also puts the rim with range of oncoming debris.

rim chip

When I had the Elise and went to the dealer for new rear tires, the installer nicked the rims. The rims were repaired by the dealer via a traveling alloy rim repair specialist - did a perfect job.

Those traveling rim guys are top notch. I had all four alloys completely redone in a day on my wrangler. The wheels were scorched from wheeling. Came with a 12 month warranty. Cost me 90 a wheel, but they were 16's. I priced out my 19/20 set up on my S and they want 225 a wheel. Drive wisely!

+1 for wheel repair service.

I had to use one to touch up my silver RACs after some a-hole in a Merc SUV came into my lane and smacked my wheel. Very minor touch up needed, but did an excellent job.
