I am tall with a 95 S4s (stock & mint) and aging eyes. I cannot even see never mind read the gauges. I would like to install a HUD that works well with the Esprit and does not require and physical modification to the dash area. I really only need speed and RPM but oil and water temp is good too. Anyone have some suggestions?

I had looked at this one on eBay and when I entered 95 Esprit in their compatibility box is said not compatible. I am not willing to buy it without more info how it connects and the site is vague. I have bought many things on eBay hoping it fits and then doesn't ;( I am hoping someone found one that works with a non OBD-II Esprit.

They have a NON OBDCII version. Hooking into the speed sensor, etc. stuff is pretty simple, I used it (speed sensor) when I installed the cruise control on my 1994 a few weeks ago.

I don't have a HUD

Just commenting they have version for non OBDC II card

Shadow Dash MS, the Android real time gauge display app for the Megasquirt includes a HUD option but for now it requires a Megasquirt ECU. It does use any available GPS signal (built into Android device or available from external device over bluetooth) though so it does not require a speed sensor for the speedo display.

I am using it with a 10" Acer Iconia tablet that has a built in GPS so I get the speedo display with no extra equipment. The applet allows the user to choose from several different gauge styles.

I like the resulting display in my fuel injected Jensen-Healey (2.0L 907 motor).

I decided to get the INFINITE HUD unit. I will post results after I install and use it for a while.

All done, HUD working

Update - Now installed
I installed the 360Infinite HUD as shown in this thread, $80 on eBay.
The toughest part was taking off the binnacle. Once off, all the wires I needed were within the gauge area and it was very easy to install. The speed sensor wire (orange/brown) is a common type mail/female singe wire connector so it was easy to make a connector that Y’d off without cutting wires. I tapped in to the RPM white/slate wire by stripping its shielding (no cutting). Power comes from the rear defrost switch which I tapped in to from stripping the shielding off the wires. I am also using it as the switch to power the HUD on/off. I unplugged the defrost wire on the window, I have never used it anyway and if I need it I just plug it back on at the window.

The wires come out from under the front of the binnacle and I used some gentle two-way tape to secure it in place on the dash between the binnacle and the windshield right below the serial number plate. The system dims at night and is bright enough in sunlight that I don't need the mirrored film it comes with.

The Lotus dash is low (I am 6’2”), dark and has small text (I am getting old) so I can't read my speed (it is MPH). Also when I am driving hard, I am not looking down at the gauges to see the RPM and tend to hit the rev limiter often. The Heads Up Display projects onto the windshield in my line of view just above he number plate, yet low enough not to interfere with road vision.

The white circular dial is RPM and when it turns red I need to shift. On the right is speed in KPH (Canada), it turns red at 120 KPH (adjustable). I calibrated speed with my GPS at 40 KPH and at 90 KPH so I am certain the HUD is accurate. It is perfect and I love it!

The clear LED (green) in the foreground is the car alarm indicator.

My link to this URL keeps breaking. Is there a way for me to upload the image to the forum directly?

Nice!

1995 Esprit's have the electronic tach and speedo, correct?

Still Lovin it

It has been a month since I installed the HUD unit in my Esprit and I thought I would note that I still absolutely love it...unfortunately so does my wife as the speed is clearly visible to the passenger as well

Readout looks nice! I was hoping to find a HUD with turbo boost and oil pressure (before I had to make a custom gauge mount), but no such luck. Wound up installing them in the center console instead. I'm hopeful someone will eventually make such a HUD unit.

Do you have a pic of what the actual unit looks like on the dash?

Images of the HUD unit mounted on the dash

I have take two images both from outside the car as the unit cannot be seen from the inside. One image is shot looking forward from the top of the windshield, the second from the front looking to the windshield towards the back of the car. The unit is below the serial number plate and when off, not noticeable unless looking for it.

I believe you can pick that up on the aldl connector for the ecu.

Do a search on cruise control, I think it mentions the wire in question. If not, Sanj can chime in, he is quite versed on the aldl plug.

Correct. Mine is a 1994 S4. I had to put a pin in the connector to the ECU at right rear of car then ran this wire to the cruise control in the front boot.

If he doesnt find the location, wire, etc. I can then look and take pics of the one I used.

FYI.. when you add the pin in the cable which connects to the ECU.. if you dont have a pin laying around try Radio Shack. I got lucky and had one in my junk drawer from a Nissan..

There are two aldl connectors under your glove box, or the air bag, depending what you have. One is for the ecu, the other is for the anti lock brakes. So you do not have to go to the rear ecu connector. WC Engineering sells aldl connectors, I got one from John recently.

Got the HUD installed yesterday. I was lucky and my ECU connector already had a pin in J2B8. My car is a 95 with revised wiring harness. Checked continuity with the wire in the binnacle and it was good. Just spliced into the tach wire, brown/orange speed sensor wire, lights on wire and power and ground and it works just fine. Instructions are terrible, of course. But I figured out calibration after a couple of false starts.

Actually works pretty good for $80.

All my connections were done under the binnacle on my 95 S4s. The wire at the speedo uses a spade connector and I simply installed a Y splitter which I made and then tapped in to it. I think I had to slice in to the Tach wire.

I decided to make an on/off switch by connecting unit + power via the rear defrost switch. I unplugged the defrost at the window as I have never used it. I am told the mirrors will get power when this is on but it does not seem to be an issue. I thought I may want to turn it off at night, but it auto dims and is great at night.

I later learned that I lined this up so the HUD on the windshield is directly inline with the headlight when it is up. This gives a very nice solid color backdrop behind the projection at night.
I continue to love this display, so does my wife who now constantly reminds me when I am speeding :facepalm

Please, never use Photobucket or any other third-party image-hosting source to post images on any forum. What ends up happening is that they "time out" and you end up with the dreaded broken pic icon instead. I'm on some Honda forums and they do this crap and the really important pictures end up broken. If you do it correctly and attach to the forum via inline or attachment using the forum software, the images will remain indefinitely, provided the admins of the site do their due diligence and upgrade properly.
