I had an '00 Firebird and I remember reading a review comparing it to the Camaro (they are basically identical other than the Firebird's Popup headlights). For some reason the Firebird was putting down just slightly better lap times and the reviewer wasn't able to come up with any reason so he said it's clearly the adder power from the popup headlights.

I loved them, but it was pretty annoying when you'd have to flip the lights on multiple times because one just didn't want to pop.

The really cool thing about popup headlights was ...

They could wink it at you ...
Great nostalgia post!

I've always loved the pop-up headlights of the Mk1 and Mk2 MR2s. Pop-ups can change the personality of a car in a second, and maybe that's one of the reasons I've always liked them.

As a kid I always dreamed of a car with pop up headlights. I've still not owned one!
Ditto, A man that gets my point. And now for some I thought looked cool in the 80's and 90's

And of course I think headlights spoil the look of the body lines, The first NSX was always the best looking...

You can't pitch a bad ass slant nose anymore because the hood shape has to accomidate headlights. Thats why cars appear to all look the same these days
I am hoping with the Laser and LED lighting technology we have today with low heat generation we can start designing some new styles.

I guess my background in Computer Animation and Graphic/Industrial Design clouds my judgement at times LOL

Cant forget my "Holy Grail" I worshiped over as a youth..

And lastly for the pop up haters, This is considered to most to be the most beautiful car ever built by Lamborghini

Yes, it has pop up headlights. Oh and so does BMW's (flame suit on) Only real "Sports car" they ever made.

I will own this one one day.. Funny the pop up headlights never stopped the F40 from hitting 200Mph.

Go buy a cougar.

The irony is that popup headlights were invented as aerodynamic enhancement.
...
... It was all about conveying the feeling of speed and flights of fancy, or maybe more accurately, the fantasies of flight...
...
I have never seem a plane with popup lights.

Here's a quick and dirty photoshop showing "closed" popups

Actually, looks like you could make some colored headlight covers. Protects the lights during the day, remove for night/dusk. Would be pretty easy to mold.

Shawn, that stanced Esprit in your first pic, I could have sworn I saw that same car in Montreal once. Does anyone on the forum have any idea about it?

I had pop up headlights on my 1984 SR5 Corolla. I had noticed that many cars with such headlights had mechanical problems with the activation.

However (yeah Toyota!) the headlights never once failed in 21 years. Amazing.

The funniest experience was during winter after a bout of freezing rain. I turned on the headlights and heard an extremely loud cracking sound. It was the dutiful headlights reliably popping up once again, cracking through the layer of ice.
