Took Delivery of a ‘17 Evora 400 — within 24 hours someone smashed the passenger wind

It’s been an interesting 24 hours. I picked up a new evora 400 yesterday — which is/was an awesome ride. I parked the car in A decent neighborhood for 15 mins and while I was gone someone smashed the window with a bat looking for valuables. Other than the window there are a few chips on the paint from the glass. Brought the car back to the dealer. Will get the diagnostic on Monday.

Well the first 40 miles were a lot of fun...

Wow, that really is an unpleasant way to start ownership! Sorry for you, that sucks

Astoria NY

Just hoping the dealer gets everything back to the original delivery condition. I’m sure it will be fine in hindsight but hearing glass rattle through the car door on the drive home was pretty painful. Not to mention the interior being covered in glass and having a few minor paint chips on the passenger door.

**** in Astoria queens? I live here too and was worried about parking my car outside once in awhile. I parked my exige here a bunch of times and had no issues

Tho, I have just as bad luck. The first week of owning the car I hit a raccoon on the highway. Needs a new front bumper.
Waiting for the repair estimate now. Probably like $8k in damages.

That sucks.... their hands should fall off for vandalizing anything let alone your brand new car. I’m sure the dealer will get it right and hopefully it doesn’t crush your insurance premium.

I’m thinking it won’t, given it’s a comprehensive claim. I’ll see if they require a police report but we had several witnesses if my insurance (geico) does.

Typically rates don’t go up for claims that are not at-fault, particularly comprehensive claims. Though to be fair, I’m convincing myself of this to some extent.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your new car. Things are really getting bad out there, my sister lives in Seattle, she never leaves anything inside her Tesla regardless of the neighborhood because car break-ins are so prevalent.

OP, I'm so sorry to see that, especially on a brand new car. Good luck on the repairs.

@MKM - Hopefully lightning won’t strike the same place twice and you’ll be done with unfortunate events for this vehicle. Don’t let the idiot who did this cast a pall over all the great fun you are going to have with your new vehicle.
@Juan - 1/5215 = nearly nothing. Thanks for your input. Now maybe you can work on a useful contribution to the community.

Anyone have any experience replacing a side window on an evora? Is this going to be a difficult piece of glass to replace that will require a long wait time?

#16 ·
Looks like the 400 uses the same window glass as the S1, so I'd imagine it's not impossible to source one in the states.

Worst case scenario I’m sure your insurance company can find a custom glass manufacturer to do a window for you. Custom auto window glass is a relatively common request particularly in the hot rod industry.

Probable ease of replacement doesn’t negate what a couple of D-bags did to your brand new car.

Be sure to get all the glass out of the seat. Otherwise riding someone around naked could be dangerous.

Lotus must stock windows, no? I say that, but this could be the punchline of the morning... I would want OEM glass over a custom piece. Taking the door panel shouldn't be so hard. Lotus keeps it simple.

Very sorry about your car, same thing happened to me twice in Manhattan :insert angry face here:

The dealer can order a new window and replace it for you, the installation is similar to the Exige.

Sorry to hear that. Where in Manhattan? I live in in Manhattan and while I garage park the car, I am going to be forever paranoid where I street park it god forbid i want to take the car to lunch or something crazy like that.

With regards to damage, bigger issue in my opinion is how to handle small paint chips. There are only a couple of them, but I can't leave as is and don't really want to have to repaint the entire door.

Dealer will back back to me today with info.

Sorry to hear that! Damn 911 owners (j/k).

Hope you get back on the road soon. When you do, please post your driving impressions.
Lots of us on LT eager to hear more about the 400.

Expecting to get a damage quote today. They do not however, have a window in the US, so one has to be ordered from the UK. Hoping that doesn't take very long...

Waiting to hear their recommendation on how to handle a couple of paint chips today. Will update when i hear from them.

Man, that sucks. Aside from ingress/egress, attention is probably the biggest negative of these (or any fun car). Be warned, too, when parallel parking since people will not see where your front bumper is when they try to back in in front of you. If you have to parallel park, try to get a front end spot.

Hang in there, brother!

This too, shall pass.

If you haven’t already asked Lotus for the authorized or recommended body shops for your state, that might be worth doing. I was told that there is a very small number of such shops. As an example, I heard that for the state of California, there are three such businesses.

I’ve owned my ‘13 Evora S for 4.5 years now and I love it now as much as when I bought it. I hope that you will feel the same - if not today, maybe sometime soon. They are great cars that we are fortunate to own; even though we all suffer damages and problems, whether they are intentional or not.

Thank you. Luckily we have several lotus dealers in the NYC area. Right now the car is with a Lotus/Lambo/Bugatti dealer so i feel it is in good hands.

quick update:
they sourced a side window in the states, which should be at the dealer tomorrow. Once they receive it, they quoted me 3 days to install and clean up all the glass in the car and touch up two small paint chips.

With regards to the paint, they recommended just touching these up and not repainting. The top one in the picture below is roughly the size of a pencil tip.

So sorry about your car. Cities have lots of folks that are less fortunate. I live 15 minutes from downtown Austin and would not park an exotic car there. It is like waving a red flag to a bull.
